No Marshall then.  Actually my review of the lines proved most useful, my most spectacular novelty I worked to a draw, another works to a win, one is a rare move, and one is possibly an unplayed novelty.  IMO White gets advantage in the Marshall, even for computer chess.  However although I am happy to test my theory in a tournament such as this, I am glad to see the Caro-Kann too, because it is a most popular opening where I live, and I have faced an IM in these lines on numerous occasions, and I have some very good prep here, if only I memorized it...

Although I think the advance variation is best objectively, the text has quite a bit of sting plus it gets Caro-Kann players out of their comfort zone and there is less known theory here.  Plus the positions are a lot of fun for the attacking player.
Parent - - By Master Om (*****) [in] Date 2012-04-01 05:57
Its not I am Afraid. But I know I can draw with Marshall for sure. I have a forced line in my arsenal. But I Want a win this time. So Played it.
Parent - - By Schachmatt (****) [us] Date 2012-04-01 05:58 Edited 2012-04-01 06:05
I have some new ideas in the Marshall, I don't doubt you can draw, but it would not have been easy.  Anyways, this should be fun!

[Edit:  I saw the line you played last game, and I would not have allowed that draw.  I know the ICCF theory on the Marhsall and mine eschews the played book draws here.]
Parent - - By Master Om (*****) [in] Date 2012-04-01 06:39
I dont know ICCF Theory. I know Marshall and to draw it.
Parent - By Schachmatt (****) [us] Date 2012-04-01 06:51
I know Marshall and how not to draw.  Maybe, a draw would have happened, but there are ways of getting a normal and good game.

Lots of choices for Black to make, some of theory in book is wrong [in fact one of the more common ways to play leads to a bad position for Black as the statistics and engines indicate so it will not happen here] , and none of the ways AFAIK is easy.

By the way, liked the way how the boards ordered themselves -- the position on move 3 before move 2.

The idea here is if Black takes a liberty to make a move like c6, then I can take a liberty to strengthen my center via f3.
Parent - By Fritz202 (**) [us] Date 2012-04-01 20:19
Yeah I remember see this idea on chessbase article once. I forget the name of the European GM that brought this line up a couple of years ago. I believe his last name started with an (E) I believe.

What does your book say at 3.f3?

Its an interesting idea, I didn't know someone would try it at this level.
Parent - By Nelson Hernandez (Silver) [us] Date 2012-04-01 20:28
It has been tried many times before and actually it has the second-highest success rate of any move in this position, just barely behind Nd2, which is way more drawish.  Definitely a playable move.
Parent - - By Schachmatt (****) [us] Date 2012-04-01 20:39
I'm not going to say what I think Black's best move is, , but Qb6 I have seen the most often OTB, somewhat contrary to what is most common in the databases, e6, dxe4, and g6 --- and all of the above are considered perfectly acceptable, although I do not quite agree with that --- White gets a little 'something'.  Shankland came out with a video for chess.com on this line (3.f3 --- the fantasy variation  ) quite recently by the way, although I believe I have an improvement for White on the analysis he presented, and in fact, I have improvements on the chesspub theory, in many of the variations of this line, otherwise I would not have played f3.

This position can be compared to a French in which White has pushed f3 and Black c6 and there are some transpositions... except I really do not the consider the positions the same - I do not have to play e5, although I may do so later at a more opportune time.
Parent - - By Nelson Hernandez (Silver) [us] Date 2012-04-01 23:14
I will say that my book favors 3.Nc3 as the top move, but 3.Nd2 and 3.e5 are very close.  (Nc3 and Nd2 probably end up transposing, obviously.)  One of those three choices would be played about 90% of the time.  Next come exd5 and f3.  The latter would be higher-ranked if it was played as often as the other choices.  My book gives the tried-and-true an edge over the statistically successful but speculative early in the game.
Parent - - By Schachmatt (****) [us] Date 2012-04-02 00:20
I prefer 3.e5 as the top move, although 3.Nc3 leads to a slight plus, I've found it a difficult position to play for much, and sometimes the material burns off pretty quickly.  3.e5 leads to nuanced positions, if followed by 4.Nf3 (the Short variation) White probably has a small edge.  I am surprised 4.f3 is so rare; I think 4.f3 is not speculative, and it has been seen more often of late, given I consolidate my position at the appropriate moment if necessary --- I have no reason to be worse after 4.f3, if anything slightly better!   White in some positions treats the position like an English attack Sicilian.  It's true that White has to take energetic measures after this move, in this sense, I guess, White is risking more.
Parent - - By Wrath of the Titans (****) [sa] Date 2012-04-02 00:30
If im not mistaken OM is an expert of this line as well in white side
Parent - By Schachmatt (****) [us] Date 2012-04-02 00:35
 great!
Parent - - By Nelson Hernandez (Silver) [us] Date 2012-04-02 04:05
I wouldn't call it speculative either except in relative terms.  The move is played about 1% of the time in that position.
