Do you have any advice on best memory for SR-X running two E5-2687w CPUs.
I will use the 1200 Watt power supply, dvd player, tech station, two 470 GTX video cards, and the Crucial SSD off of my SR-2.
So I will have to buy four channel memory, 4x2gig for each socket for 16 gigs of ram. This is all the ram I will need for chess.
So give me some memory specs that are currently being sold on NewEgg, or better yet a part number.
Also I am wondering if I can use my Noctua 14s off of my 1366 sockets for the 2011 sockets and just use the new 2011 Noctua mounting brackets.
I left this question at the Noctua site, not sure how quick they are.
I am hoping I can use the same Power Supply plugs for MB power??? Surly SR-X is the same.
So for a SR-X upgrade what does a person need??
1. 4 channel memory, 4x2 gig for each socket to get 16 gigs of ram.
2. 2 E5-2687w CPUs.
3. EVGA SR-X Motherboard. (maybe Asus but for now I will wait on EVGA SR-X)
Is there anything I am forgetting?
I could get one of these tech stations but my home made one looks good and works good and it only costs me about $100 in material, and it is paid for. Just another expense I dont have to have.

I have the two cpus so maybe all I need is the memory and MB.
thanks

4 channel memory does not exist any memory that runs dual etc will run in the system.
Quad memory is a selling point not a fact your sr-2 memory if 1600 or over will work just fine.

I will try that.
I just ordered two more of the 2gig OCZ gold 2000 memory off of Ebay.
This will give me 4 sticks of 2 gig for each socket if I use my SR-2 memory.
The SR-2 has three red slots per socket and the SR-X has four red slots per socket.
I just wanted to make sure I understood going from 3 slots to four slots.
Since no overclock and will run at stock clock of 3.1x16, then I did not want to give up any memory speed.
I will not get rid of my SR-2 until I run several benchtests on my SR-X.
If the SR-X is a dog then I will sell the 2 E5 cpus and the SR-X MB on Ebay and keep the SR-2.
Thanks David.

Whatever you do please post benchmarks. Far too many people are claiming things without doing so.
No problem I am a bench freak.
It will take some time to gather parts.
I have everything ordered now except MB.
Maybe EVGA or Maybe Asus.
I think David went with the Asus dual 2011 socket MB.
I saw a bench chart where Supermicro server board beat out all other brands.
So just because some manufacturers use the word Game does not mean it is the fastest.
It is amazing how a pure server board beat a game board in a bench test.
I noticed Asus also used the word "game".

Will post some benchmarks next week werewolf are you going to use sr-x?? will be intrested if the asus board kicks out the same benchmarks
Next week I am testing the SR-X running two Sandy Bridge E5 Xeons @ 3.1 Ghz (3.4Ghz with Turbo).
I suspect it will be slower than the SR-2 overclocked to 4-4.5 Ghz, but we'll see. The more data we have the better - this is a lot of money!

Same system but i have the asus board lets see how they fair....
I still expect a performance mark up on the sr-2

Thanks Paul - that's exactly what I was after.
I will be as interested as the next man in your findings, you may be better off buying Davids hardware for £900.
suj thinks highly of these new CPU,s.

Which cpu's...David E5649 i know it clocks very well.
e5 clock for clock core for core is better when I get time whichever weekend that is I will post you some numbers on e5-2687 and e5-2690.

I am testing the e5-2687w tomorrow morning
I hope you'll publish some benchmarks here
Yes I will. Suj never replied to me on the whole core vs core thing (Sandy bridge vs Westmere @ same clockspeeds, equal core count) so that will be an interest to me as well.
If you have anything you especially want me to test let me know...I have 20 minutes with the 16 core workstation @ 3.1 Ghz (3.4 Turbo)

Rybka 4.1 nps in the starting position would be great

what memory?
which MB?
are you using the ES cpus?
what is kns before turbo and after?
are you using air coolers if so which ones?
thanks

its not Carls,he will give us as much info as he can.
new xeons no good overclock, the bus is locked in 100 mhz, and may be increased by 6% (106 mhz), for the moment, the best choice is to wait for intel release Xeon processor serie-X (unlock cpus). The problem is not on the motherboard, but in cpu...
Yes this news has been out for some time.
thanks

thanks

thats what we are waiting for.
Intel XEON E5-2687w 8 core 3.1gig (locked)
Intel XEON E5-2687x 8 core 3.1gig (unlocked)
Intel XEON E5-2687x 8 core 3.1gig (unlocked)
Intel have given no indication any e5 cpus will be unlocked maybe they will release some but I get a feeling they won't this time.
Me too
It is no surprise really that these are locked. With a TDP of 150W at stock, cooling an overclocked CPU would be very diffculr
