A new Opening Book is released. It is optimized for Houdini playing style, but can be used with other engines and even be connected to other interfaces, such as Fritz, using Aquarium Book Adapter. Houdini Opening Book provides the latest chess theory that proved itself in millions of advanced chess games and matches of top human players. It includes over 65 million positions. You need to update Aquarium to build 490 (see below) to use it. More about the Opening Book at http://chessok.com/?p=26080.

A new update for Aquarium is also released, fixing bugs and adding new features, including compatibility with Houdini Opening Book. More about the update at http://chessok.com/?p=26068.

I have been having a look at the new Houdini Book and spotted the following:

The H2 Expanded book appears to want to play 14.Bd2 however the H2 Lite version does not, see attached screenshots.

Is the wrong field being displayed/used in the expanded book by default?

Completely seperate to the point above.

I had a look at the options for the Houdini 2 Expanded tree as I would like to duplicate some of the layout features used for my own trees, however I could not see how the layout was achieved. Can anyone point me at instructions?

Thanks

Shaun

There are many tricks connected with the books. What really are you interested in?

The main one is grouping several columns under a single heading and getting rid of the dividing lines between the columns in the new group.

Colouring etc is interesting too

How do I load the Houdini Opening Book into the Fritz GUI?
Parent - - By Kappatoo (****) [de] Date 2012-03-07 13:30
I only have the old Aquarium, i.e. build 3.2.1. (Well, technically speaking I also have the new one, but no longer use it.) Is this a problem if I want to use the opening book? I understand that I won't be able to use all of its functions, but can I at least use those functions present in the Dufek Rybka book?
Also, is this book in any way related to the Dufek book? Also, who is Roger E. Zibell?

Any user experiences with the book - do you like it?

Could someone confirm that (whether) I need the latest Aquarium to use the Houdini book?
Any experiences with the book?

There are very few people still using Aquarium 3, so I'm not sure if the book was ever tested with that version.

Do you have information indicating that the majority of Aquarium 3 customers also bought Aquarium 4 (and that those who did didn't switch back)?
Well, I may nevertheless give it a shot. But another problem I have is that there seems not to be too much information about the book available. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of Dufek's book, I would surely buy the Houdini book if I had reason to think it's of comparable quality.

Actually I think that most Aquarium users upgraded to version 5  I know about of couple of those who reverted to Aquarium 4, but most upgraded successfully. I'm pretty sure (based on my talks with users) that very few are still using version 3.

Users have different measures of quality. The book that scores best in engine matches isn't necessarily the best one for chess players (OTB, correspondence players...). Two players may have completely different view of the same opening book depending on how well it covers their favorite opening lines.

Oh, there's already a version 5. :) It seems I am not totally up to date.

I am exclusively interested in OTB play. If someone was willing to answer specific questions of mine about how well specific lines are covered, that would of course be great. But any kind of feedback would be welcome.

Kappatoo the Houdini book gives the best examples of using groups and discarded moves.  It's actually 3 different books, you should try it!
Parent - - By Kappatoo (****) [de] Date 2012-03-08 21:27
Yeah, maybe I will just try it. Unfortunately, I don't really know what 'using groups and discarded moves' means.
Parent - - By keoki010 (Bronze) [us] Date 2012-03-09 00:42
Well the discarded moves in Aquarium are a way to study/define any opening against the success % of any database.  Others on this forum are more qualified than I am to explain this. Check Dadi's columns and ask him for help!

A good article on using the discarded moves feature can be found at:
