That ivy bridge power benchmark is most impressive. Nearly the performance of the 3960x but with half the power under load.

Plus someone overclocked it to 7 GHz?! Holy hell. I take that to mean it will be pretty overclockable.

Also the Xeon 2690 looks awesome!!

It has always been my big hope the Ivy Bridge will be very overclockable.

The 7GHz was obtained with dry ice.  I am waiting to see air/water overclocks.

We have already some data about the latest Xeon Sandy Bridge processors, but the Fritz bench results are with Hyper-Threading ON

For example, the Fritz Chess Benchmark on E5-2680 3099 MHz HT ON 16 Threads:20.962 nodes per second

I expect on Xeon E5-2680 3099 MHz HT OFF 8 Cores to be performed minimum 17.000 nodes per second

Does the supplier say what they will overclock them to?

Or what the extended lead time will be?

(both out of accademic interest as I will buy a more modest Ivy Bridge assuimng they overcock as well as I hope)

@Regularuser

this is what i got from their response.

Currently the lead time for the Genesis Pro X2 is up to April 20th. The final overclocking numbers will be announced before that date. If you wish to place an order the engineers will keep you up to data on the overclocking data and you can choose to remain with overclocking or use the default clock speed.

Thanks.   I'll await the overclocking results with great interest.

i think you will find that when Ivy Bridge is released, best i can see atm is 2x 8 cpu hope for 2x 10,my friend BigBen will build it and overclock it to the death. When Tony does his builds for me he posts everything on forum with screenshots ect.Lets just wait and see.Dont quote silly specs at me on what i should buy.
i mean no offence.
Also watch Majid,he may build even better than Tony and i but we have fun doing it and arn't rivals.

we have fun building big computers same as Lukas does and to put it crudely he is the govenor atm.

I am wondering if Lukas is planning to buy some of these to update/upgrade his cluster ?

For Rybka a 2x E5-2687W computer will be roughly 14% faster than a 2x X5690 assuming it will run at 3.3 GHz with turbo. It will consume roughly 15% more energy. And the CPUs will cost more (15-30%).  This doesn't sound like a good deal.
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2012-03-09 22:48
Is the x5690 will still exist or is it replaced by the new E5 ?

Do you know if we can expect a price decrease for a x5650 ?
Parent - By Lukas Cimiotti (Bronze) [de] Date 2012-03-10 08:17
Intel's policy is to never lower prices of old Xeons. The X5690 will probably be available for at least 2 years.

how do you know? Do you have a link?

i have sandybridge e5 atm and iam told by a source the ivybridge xeons will be the same everything locked...

> i have sandybridge e5 atm

How did you get it so early? The Ivy Bridge Xeons are due out...when? Later this year?

This is TERRIBLE news that they cannot be overclocked!! Intel is being annoying.
Parent - - By David Evans (***) [gb] Date 2012-03-08 16:41
Ivy Bridge Xeons will be the back end of 2012

Iam running my sandybridges on this board the board over clocks the cpus dont so a real nightmare..

http://uk.asus.com/Server_Workstation/Workstation_Motherboards/Z9PED8_WS/

Board is nice shame the cpus are locked

I've read a number of companies are releasing over-clockable boards for the E5 Xeon. Since ASUS etc aren't idiots, they must have a reason to do this.

Do you think Intel may release an unlocked CPU later?
Parent - - By David Evans (***) [gb] Date 2012-03-08 17:56
Not sure if intelk will or not but with turbo 2 on the xeons they still reach decent speeds for chess.

Maybe we will just have to accept this.

But that's bad - the old dual Xeon westmeres/gulftowns (6 cores each) will be faster since they can be overclocked to 4.2 Ghz or so.

aaargh.

But does turbo 2 make ALL cores go faster at the same time? I thought turbo mode worked by raising the speed of a few cores if the rest were inactive.

Since chess engines will use all cores simultaneously....does Turbo mode help?
Parent - By David Evans (***) [gb] Date 2012-03-11 12:09
Turbo speeds works across all cores but at a lower speed works lout about 300 to 400 mhz on top of stock speeds the 2.9 cpu runs turbo all cores at 3.4

i have asked my source about this,i cannot believe that you will be unable to o/c Ivy Bridge.
Parent - By David Evans (***) [gb] Date 2012-03-09 06:40
Seems intel will push further turbo on the sandybridge we have turbo 2.............

This is from EVGA forum.
"Sad part is, unlike the SR-2, the SR-X is limited by the cpu for overclocking.

http://www.evga.com/forums/fb.ashx?m=1485672

Quote from their Product Manager.
Quote :
Well there are 2 parts to this question...

Does the board support OC'ing: Yes

Does the board support OC'ing on current CPU's? The answer unfortunately is no.

Current CPU's are multiplier locked, and they don't scale very high on bclock."

This is what happens when one company gets a monopoly. Intel have a bag of goodies they don't want to share because no one is making them.
