Surprising Matt hasn't said anything in this game. I wonder if he is taking this game very seriously to not be talking in it.

i'm giving my opponent lots of options to think about.  i think this to be an excellent line to be tested in cc.  playing positional chess.   yet to do a DPA.  of course in aiming for this position i had to be careful of the variations stemming from this position... that the tactics work out okay... i had committed to playing this playing this position on the 20th move.  so obviously i felt i may have some chances here and if it is just a draw i will have to try my backup line in b90 in which i will have some chances.

there was a force draw line some moves back in which black has to force a perpetual in the end, however it would have been easy to miss the existence of this draw line, but a few moves into the line black would find the draw quite easily.

rc8, nf5 slight surprises, otherwise no surprises so far.  i feel the pressure is on black to make the decisions.  not a simple position to analyze with engines.

the current position is kind of the point of my previous play.

also, how did my opponent gain 10+ hours after his last move, perhaps quite a bit more, could someone look into this, thanks!

further it seems like I gained slightly more than the increment with my last move.

Back a while ago we had a time when xfcc play was down for about 12 hours or so. Dadi has just added 12 hours to all clocks as compensation.

Game flat.
This is draw...
Parent - By Schachmatt (****) [us] Date 2012-03-06 00:39
you're right.  i was playing for endgame chances in which i would have chances based on my queenside passers, plus the engine scores being in black's favor, it's simple to make a mistake and play into an endgame lost for Black.  you played into my main line exactly my calcualations from move 20 on ...nf5 when that was play around move 26, which i guess not much a surprise, many positions are forcing.  f4 i think i recall it was move 24 i worked out to a force draw, it's a pretty line.  objectively this is a small improvement for white, bc this endgame is marginally worse for white so i think.  12. g5 is a slight improvement for white imo but i know that the mainline after 12...b4 and 23. Bd4 is 100% draw [ even nf3 works out to a book draw here... for black on move 24 or 25 i forgot ].  i think white has another way to make black's position to make matters unpleasant for Black in mainline B90 than the line i played, however, i felt like the line i played was the more interesting test for me of this 12. rg1 idea, championed by anand and a few others, one point of which 12...b4 is dubious.  i didn't like rac8 much bc the rooks belong on b8 and c8 on my understanding as the f8 rook does not belong on f8 in the positions succeeding nd5 in this game, and plus black has an alternative line which i thought is a bit easier on black.  however, there is nothing concrete here for white in the text opening lines succeeding 13...rc8 and ruben played this completely accurately its seems to me.

will have to reevaluate my concept on 20.rg4 but this is completely consistent to how i learned these positions.  more likely i will play 12. g5 in future and play a position in which i can squeeze black from here, i have a nice concept here which makes black's life unpleasant, maybe an improvement of sorts in moves 13-23 for white... still i felt Black should hold in the end, although maybe not so easy.... so back to the drawing board a bit on my approach should i see b90 again.

i will play things out a few more moves, after all i would consider black slightly better in this position, but there are few chances for mistakes of course.

well played ruben!

> Ruben: Game flat. This is draw...
>Schachmatt: you're right

FWIW, if this was an otb event, this game would have been drawn. Ruben's first comment would be regarded as a draw offer and Schachmatt's response would be regarded as draw agreed. All other commentary is irrelevant.

In short, any mentioning of the word draw is almost always regarded as a draw offer. The reason for this is that Player A could make unclear draw offers and try and distract their opponent by 'offering' a draw, Player B accepts and then player A says that they were only joking, or it was just a thought out loud.

So any arbiter who knows what they are doing would hold Player A to their call of draw and since Player B accepted, the game would be officially drawn at that point.

Since both players have played on, the game will continue. Also, on here draw offers should always be offered by marking the check box in xfccplay for draw offers.

good point.

OK
I never will comment again.
Sorry.
I think offer draw is with command in xfccplay.
Anyway, is same for me, draw or continue, it is draw.

why you dont send him a draw offer?maybe he will accept if both players agree about the draw

por que no le envias una oferta de tablas?puede que las acepte si los dos pensais que son tablas

thought 39...e4 was the only real try for a win however 40.fe draws.  Also 40.Qf4 is interesting after h3 c3 Be7 I would slightly prefer Black.

I know the question was not directed at me, but I'll answer it for myself.   As I mentioned earlier, some time around move 35 probably, I thought my position slightly worse --- true, I was willing to risk this given the traps I set at earlier points, and a draw is a draw whatever the objective value of the position.

I usually don't offer draws when I consider my position worse.

1 b/c etiquette
2 b/c if draw refused, then opponent far less likely to offer draw later
3 b/c draw offer can give opponent psychological advantage

(b/c == because)

i preffer dont comment at the game until the game ends, but i agree with you about all the other points:

i dont offer draws if im worst, just for honestity;i only offer draw if i think the position is a draw(me or the opponent being equalized,or one of us being very very very slightly disadvantage)

about all your 3 points,i agree with you in all 3 points

I always wondered about this Garvin. Many times this happens like what these players said or something like "This is sure looking like a draw, don't you think?" Now what was that? Is it a draw offer that we can accept? It sound more like a feeling out process to see what the other person is thinking without making an "official" draw offer.  In this game, which is dead draw according to both players, neither one wants to be the first to offer. So they keep on playing, that drives me nuts! There is no shame in making a draw offer. Make it "ONCE" if it is declined then I think the ball in in their court and it's up to them to offer the next time.

Hello Socott!

You are my Friend, and more or less you know me.
If i want offer draw formal, i will click in box draw into the client and end.
If i want offer draw informal i will write "Hi Friend!  Offer draw". Very easy.
I don't click in the client and i don't write "offer draw", I only made a comment.
Is strange, all people can to make comment, but the  player no...
Regards, Ruben

Hi Ruben! Of course we are always friends. I wasn't making my comment at anybody, just informal draw offers in general. I only thought of it because of Garvin's comments above. So just for the record, I would like Garvin to say that the only formal draw offer that will be accepted in this tour is checking the box in xfcc, or make an official "claim-of-draw" to the TD.

Best regards, Scott

This way, friendly banter like "it's looking drawish" will be consider as only chat so no one gets confused. (like me, :red:)

for me, it's a non-issue, i expect to play down to the Kings every game as my opponent has every right to do so, or as in this tournament, 6-man tb.  in an international tournament, any mention of the word draw not immediately proceeded by a negative can be construed as a draw offer in my otb experience, which I think logical if your opponent's English is limited to hello, no, draw, good game, and bathroom.  I think it well-understood that draw offers should be sent through the client.

Quite an encouraging round for me to play positions in which the engine scores are ever in my opponent's favor, and yet my deep analyses, in the end, seem to prove correct - and it was pleasant to be able to predict Ruben's moves correctly, against Paul I was rarely very sure about which move he was going to select.  I do not mind draws if the quality of chess is high and I am able to pose my opponents some practical problems.  I will try to play something slightly less masochistic next round.  Neither of my opponents made mistakes of significance, objectively, which is a great credit to them.  Evidently I have been able to improve very much on my analysis methods from last year; additionally it was evident that my opponents put profound effort into solving the positions accurately - well done!  I will need to tweak my openings slightly and get a stroke of luck to win games this year; these are looking hard to come by.

26...Nf5 was the first non-book move for me; however, it was only a slight surprise and objectively it seems to me best.  My deep analysis started from move 20 forward.

> Also, on here draw offers should always be offered by marking the check box in xfccplay for draw offers.

This is the important point, since this is not OTB and it was stated that draw offers could only be set by using xfccplay. So Ruben's comment is ok.
