i will have a look in next few days,i am getting over a dose of flu atm.
bummer. ok, get well soon!
the quantity of my analysis for this game is 97 pages, which was a surprise to me, bc i wanted to be as lazy as possible at some points, page down, was checking my pgn for errors, standard layout big notation, not including the analysis I lost moves 14-20 when fritz crashed, i still have to redo much of that, the most interesting decision in those moments i thought was made when white played nd3. and on some lines i wasn't particularly thorough, for instance, I should have checked more what happens if my d7 knight comes to g5, or delay the development of my f6 knight, but all i wanted was one good line for black for sure to prove the soundness of my setup. however the idea of planting a knight on g3 captured my imagination because the white king is entombed. and had i left my knight on e8 longer and played bd7, maybe the game could have gone on for a very long time, both sides may be at a sort of impasse, moves 35 to 37 i believe. however if a knight comes to h3, there are few ways to get rid of it, sacrifice on the central pawn chain, plant a rook on g3, or a knight on g5. but i would have to look out for the white king running away, and even more ways of rearranging the furniture (the pieces), as it was it was 41 moves before the first piece trades, and it could have been much longer, it seemed to me the game could have easily gone another 20 moves without any piece trades.
according to a gm i know, i've heard that some gm bases of 2600+ players on a system of play are over 100 pages, page down, that is a formidable amount of material.

Playing around with different positions around move 36, usually you get very similar positions that look something like this.
What is interesting for me is - what are the plans for both sides from this position? Here are (and were some of my ideas)
White:
play Ra2, threaten a6, I thought of just playing a6, but a pawn is a pawn, and the material is important because at the least Black can give back the pawn by playing pawn h3 with a good position. Ra2 induces Ra6. This is an improvement for White, I cannot swing the rook to g8 and if Bxb5 at some point the a6 rook is being hit with tempo.
However I am not finding further ways to improve White's position except by playing Ng4. Which is a very annoying move to have to consider in every position. If White did not have Ng4 I think Black could rearrange his pieces any way he pleases given that a5-a6, Pb5 and Pc7, are accounted for or protected. So most every move with every piece is possible for Black except for the Ra6, Bd7, and Ne8. But, all my other pieces are free to move, so say that I can free up my bishop via Rg6 - Bf8-e7-d8. Or say that I get bored and shuffle my King to a8 and back to h8. What does White do? Well... Ng4 is possible and I have to take with bishop much of the time, and the positions are complicated, White gets in Bxb5 but Black gets to take on g4 twice and the positions are very complex, my concern was that for instance I take on g4 with queen, White will play Bxg3 followed by Qh3 offering the trade of queens and many of these positions favor White. However, it is quite possible that there is something here for Black, it seems to me Black has all the options and White just the one idea of Ng4, which does not work in every instance, but if White does nothing also, Black still has to work out how to break through. It's exceptionally difficult analysis... the value of tempi is less important than how to arrange the pieces and always to be on guard on a few threats, namely the idea Ng4. And true I don't always have to take on g4 immediately although I do have to concern myself about taking on g3. The real question is how do both sides really want to rearrange the furniture, at the time it seemed too much to check. Although Black has more options, I don't know if the options are good. (similarly, earlier in the game, White had more options, but few were good!)
As a last resort, White could double on the c-file and sacrifice on c7 but this does not work in the large majority of instances even for a draw. On Nh3 and Nd2 there are problems with these moves, generally sacrifices on White's pawn structure, h3, f3, in many variations.

Ok, I may have found a few issues with Nb1.
On Nb1, I'm going to play Rg7. If Nc3 Bd7 always - with Nf6 to follow and the lines I've seen Black's attack looks quite strong. If Nh3 Qh5 always - with knights on c3 and f6 the move Bg4 looks quite strong (a possibility given Nh3/Ng3). So at the moment, I find Nb1 hard to fathom, feel free to let me know when you feel better!
[EDIT 2: check things the next day and all is clearer: Nb1, with the idea of Na3, of course, so as to not interfere with the rooks, okay I will check this. I will play Bd7 of course, and White will get the bishop to d3, a very good idea, possibly we get something like the game, I will check this. EDIT 3: Ah, but a problem, here after Qh5 for Black Ne2+ and Qxf3 is too strong for Black. So I am beginning to think that Nf1 is box, force move. Given this, now I really wonder if a move like Qh5 on move 36 would have been stronger - c7 may not require protection while I still have Ne2+ winning the exchange.]
EDIT: One more point, the move I was most concerned about in the moves succeeding move 28, and more so after seeing the 31st move in the text (game) line, was 35.Nh3, but after Qg6, fortunately on deep AN, the lines seem to work out well for me, at which point I thought the game may become really special. But after seeing how those lines worked out, it's easy to wonder how I could have improved on the text lines, if possible. Still, I think that's another point worth further investigation possibly. That, and Kappatoo's 17.Bd3. From Black's perspective, I didn't have really have to analyze anything until my 19th move after I committed to a hippo with my 5th move as Black's moves to keep the center and queenside closed and play on the Kingside are both obvious and quite forced.
----------
Ok, so moves remaining for me to check for Black, 20...Bh6 a move I did not consider at all.
, 24...Bg5, 26...Bg5 which I liked less but concretely I cannot fully find a line why from my analysis to refute it, and moves 35 to 38. A new idea I just thought, can I get my bishop to d8 to relieve my knight?
And for White: moves 14 through 20, a few things there to see, mainly lines which White doesn't play Nd3, or c4 quickly, on the latter I was fully prepared, unfortunately some of this preparation I have lost; however, it seemed that Nd3 was strong when played, but I wonder if White had something else the previous moves. From the text, that's all I have left to check. There may have been another way or few for Black to conduct the attack, I think, I've alluded to a few of the ideas.
Also in cleaning up variations, some of my analysis ran away from one move to another because of transpositions, it's a bit annoying.
It's possible that I have looked at some of these things on a different move or in a different variation that transposed back into a position in the game, which happened a few times, so after every move in the game I got the game score and posted my analysis back into it, so I would not run the same analysis twice.
---
Ooh, one other very important move to check for Black: 30...Bf8, I think I thought Nf1 or Nb1 best and regularuser's Qf1 as interesting. His variation is a good starting point. And that really seems to be everything I need to check relevant to the variations played in the game.

This position is just unbelievable. Never seen anything like it in a real game.
This looks unusual even for a KID like position.

Après moi le déluge
I see the line you are working toward; it seems pretty forced at least ten moves out. It all ends in 0.00, I think.
i refrained from comment at the time you posted this.It certainly was not a position i anticapated after 9.d5.I thought i could hold it and hoped like hell i hadn't missed anything.
Matt played well in explointing my lack of knowledge in KI.
Engines were of little use in this opening and i had to work very hard to find the right moves,i had so many options at times it was virtually impossible to choose correct move.
Glad to have come out alive.
Even now i dont see where i could have played better, just chose wrong opening i guess.

4.Nc3 Is a move I wouldn't have played as it was blocking a possible c4 push.
ok with hindsight.
The setup which is considered to be the most challenging for black involve f4. For example 3.Nc3 d6 4.Be3 a6 5.f4. (In this case, black definitely has to choose a different setup than the one in your game). The setup I would consider the second-most ambitious involves c4. E.g. 3.Nf3 d6 4.c4, as Uly indicated, or 3.c4, which might be a slightly more precise move order. In this case, play can transpose into a Kings-Indian.
However, on the face of it, I liked your position in the early middlegame. It is a slightly dangerous one, mainly because engines tend to overestimate white's position greatly in such King's Indian type positions. My suspicion is that you nevertheless missed something more promising somewhere after 15...Nb8. But it would take a lot of analysis to determine this.

Is there any possibility of getting both c4 and f4 in there? It seems black gives plenty of time to white to choose a setup.
In principle, yes. The least black can get then is a King's Indian with f4, which is not considered as the most promising line for white, however. (E.g. 3.c4 d6 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.f4, etc.)

now that we've finally completed development, we can begin the middlegame.
With all the maneuvers in this game, It feels like you have been in the middle of the middlegame for a while.
looking like a draw by force
Being the black pieces in this format, that probably isn't a bad result. You played a great and most interesting position that we have seen in quite some time. I know you have made Paul think a lot in this game.
Yes, Paul defended most excellently and it has been an exceptionally high quality game. I would have to go back to my 27th or 36th move to see where I could play differently.
I have been following this game with great interest, not least because I used to play KID's many years ago and still play a system closely related to the hippo. They are fantastic for correspondence because the engines don't understand them in the early stages :)
I have spent a few mins here and there analysing over the past week and an hour and a half this morning working hard looking for improvements for black. I have found many clear drawing lines, and some murky lines which give white real opportunites to go wrong (deep losses) but are seem better for white with accurate defence, but so far no win for you. I'll keep looking if I get time, and write a little more when the game is over.
I will be really interested to know if you turn up anything.

thank you for your interest. pretty much saw the same thing. there are some deep traps. good news for black practitioners is no way for white to obtain even nominal objective advantage so i think, from move 10 on, although many sharp and difficult lines.
> I would have to go back to my 27th or 36th move to see where I could play differently.
I think that Paul would probably like to go back to his 14th. :-) Even if the sacrifice after 14.a5 b5 doesn't work (I've done extensive analysis on this, and it seems that black can extricate his pieces and force a draw), white has other options on the 15th move (I haven't analyzed these in detail) that make 14.a5 still very strong.
yes, I'll have to check this... and to play a5 on 14, white may have an extra option or few although I don't know if better; on the sac b5 options I have Black winning, but on the other options on the 15th move --- I don't have a clear assessment on that, so... interesting definitely worth checking.
These games tend to be drawish IMO.
