Is there a strength difference in analysis vs normal clock control?
If the time setting controls the move every 5 secs vs a manual move every 5 sec using analysis mode.
Also lets say both examples control to same depth. Both examples with ponder on.
thanks

Houdini uses Contempt for games so the results wouldn't be the same. To get the same result, set Contempt to 0.
In my example it would be all things equal.
First example with Contempt at 0 for both.
Second example with contempt at 1 for both.
I missed something in your reply Uly.
If contempt at 0 is better then why not for both.

There are some differences in the search algorithm between analysis and game play mode.
Some examples:
- Contempt (by default disabled in analysis mode, but you can activate it)
- Reuse of hash values (analysis mode will more readily use hash values)
- Zugzwang detection (more advanced in analysis mode)
- Verbosity of the output (game play mode will send a lot less output to the GUI)
The strength difference between the two modes is minimal.
I had read this before but forgot some of it.
Thanks for the reply Robert.
Thanks for the reply Robert.
I dare to add
- "invalidating" hash entries when close to 50-move rule (at root)
- "invalidating" hash entries when close to 50-move rule (at root)
This must be an undocumented feature!
What about when it can't communicate with the gui "Aquarium" and hangs Aq up because it decided to exit? Multiple times and very repeatable! Pm me if you want specifics.

Sorry, kg, can't find that "clock control" parameter in Houdini 2...

Where is it?
In your GUI set the clock and play a game against the engine, or otherwise set it to play mode and tell it to move, that's what he meant with "clock control".
thanks Uly.
Exactly, clock in Gui.
In the Fritz Gui, when you set the clock to seconds per move the program might take 3 or 4 times the clock setting.

Shredder Classic has "Exact time" so the engine is forced to move at the time specified.
