A small report. The first major tournament since the 2008 freestyle is since Sunday in the second stage. There have been 20 qualified from 50 participants from the 10 preliminary groups for the second stage and now play in 4 groups of 5 players and from these four groups the winners take part in the knockout finals, where the winner receives 800 U.S. $ and the three others Fini prices (converted to a value of 200, - / 100 - and 50 - U.S. $).
The tournament has relatively strong players, including 2 FIDE GM (already retired), and several previously correspondence chess-GM/SIM/IM and leading freestylers.
There are 8 stand-alone Engines that participated, and while they achieved several draws and occasional victories against centaurs, of which only one has made it into the second stage, a Komodo 4 single core engine (dt Participants: time_bandit).
With only 4 games, it sometimes takes a little luck to get to # 1 or 2 in the group and qualify. The field is as wide-spread practice internationally. Of the original 12 German participants, only 3 are in the race. Two withdrew at the beginning because of illness, one was conspicuous by its absence unexcused and will be blocked in future.
The game is played with the time format of 60 minutes + 15 sec per move.
Although the server is still in the testing phase, it has been technically trouble-free over 90% of 100 games. There were only on a few occasions where it was necessary to start the game again, besides, there were 2-3 cases where a player was possibly due to a strong "lag" getting more time credited. These cases are still under investigation, but as I said they were rare individual cases. The server has so far been relatively stable.
On Sunday, 19th February starts our 2nd Freestyle tournament (yes, while the 1st tour is still running) and we invite you all to join:

A small report, maybe too small. Let's expand it a little.
First of all, a correction, this is actually the first tournament since 2009, and not a major one in line with the PAL/CSS, which indeed took place four years ago.
The strength of the players is really puzzling.
On the one hand we have very strong ones, but on the other, we can see players hanging queens or playing like this:
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 e5 5. Nf3 Bc5 6. Qd2 Nxe4 7. Qe2 Bxf2+ 8. Kd1 d5 9. Nxe5 f6 10. Qb5+ Nc6 11. Nxc6 bxc6 12. Qxc6+ Bd7 13. Qxd5 Bg4+ 0-1
Not surprisingly, the white player was never seen again. Other weak players included some newcomers who were eliminated in the first stage (much like the FIDE GMs, mind you) and the stand-alone engines, which rarely put up a fight, and weren't able to make it to the second stage, except for the one in group 10, something which can hardly be attributed to the fact that it only ran on 1 CPU, but rather on the overall level of said group.
Probably the exception, because some groups showed a very high level, arguably, the highest ever seen in any chess tournament. Which prompted the early elimination of known players such as: Mark Eldridge, Ralf Greweling, Alvin Alcalá (current FICGS freestyle champion), Erdogan Günes (long time computer chess expert and author of the Rondo book for the 2010 WCCC in Kanazawa), Clay Hofmeister (winner of the the Mundial Chess tournament in 2010), Patrik Schoupal (EtaoinShrdlu), Mark Noble (New Zealand correspondence chess champion in several occasions), Roger Zibell (Houdini book author) and Herbert Kruse (Kreuzfahrtshiff). And this isn't the only proof, the fact that the first and second placed players in the last Freestyle have, so far, drawn all of their games against centaurs, is something to note.
The luck factor. With the current tournament format, I would say that more than "a little luck" is needed to pass to the second stage. I know this very well, because my group was probably the second weakest of them all, and I had no trouble winning all four games, I even doubt I will be able to score more than 50% in the second stage. Not that I'm complaining, luck is something the underdog needs, it's the big guns who should worry about it.
Known bugs.
-The lag is there, and specially, when your opponents PC goes to sleep it means he's basically playing without a clock. Something to fix urgently, because it asks too much micromanagement from the administrators, who need to keep a close eye on each and every game to prevent such techniques.
-If you throw a piece away the client prevents you from making any move. As found out by Eros.
-Many games against stand-alone engines had to be restarted in the main hall, as there were problems in the group rooms. There was also a bug were the engine had to play without book, leading to an easy win for the centaur opponent.

Guys, why don't you have that conversation by private message?, or in a language other forum members can understand.
Don't worry, I think it's over.

my opps played very strong and i was really impressed by BadBoy who outplayed me easy. i guess he has good database and a twice as quick pc as my quickest, but i was very impressed
he didnt make it to the next round, but he will next time :)

BadBoy is playing the second stage, and it's actually one of the players who hung the queen
maybe he used the cluster :)
and mistyped the queens loss

In his game, the queen was just the icing on the cake, but if you retract the move, you'll see he was already lost, probably as early as move 9!
I really don't know what was wrong with him. It's probably the second worst game of the tournament, only surpassed by the one I mentioned above. Check it out, you'll have a good laugh.

It's quite normal and has been the same in all PAL/CSS tours, that newcomers with unknown playing strength join a tour, but in my view there was only one player who really played liked a "beginner" or should we say, more correctly, he might habe been played without engine support (besides a very entertaining game, as you showed). This happened in your group, and as a second player withdraw in your group (due to illness, he had to go to hospital), we replaced that one by a stand-alone engine.
Though most of the stand-alone engines were a bit handicaped by using the small Infinity book, they got 40 per cent of the points (12 out of 30).
"Known bugs":
- It's the first time, I hear from a bug "as found out by Eros": "If you throw a piece away the client prevents you from making any move". Most probably you refer to "Dohakiin's" last game two days ago, and I guess, "throw a piece away" doesn't mean blunder, but dropping the piece off the board. That's a rather unusual bug, and we will try to reproduce it. It should not be possible "to throw a piece away" and such did not happen in thousands of games before.
- It's not correct saying "Many games against stand-alone engines had to be restarted in the main hall, as there were problems in the group rooms. There was also a bug were the engine had to play without book, leading to an easy win for the centaur opponent."
Correct is: Only one of the 8 engines, Deep Junior 13, while the others were Rybka/Houdini/Chiron/IvanHoe/Komodo/Stockfish/Critter, played 2 games outside the tour room. Moreover, the reasons cannot be identified as an Infinity bug: in the first case (vs. mateinfour) the user, who had just installed Deep Junior for the first time, did not find the right settings applying to InfinityChess (and once a game has been aborted or ruled by the TD, you cannot repeat it in the tour room), in the second case the player (Stabiloboss) suffered a bug due to an incorrect installation, again the game could not be repeated in the tour room. Once Junior played without book in the first game, we decided it had to play all 3 games without book.
Nevertheless, thanks for your report with some interesting info's and views.

The games played by Deep Junior 13 plus two more out of 30 are many games from my point of view. You may have another, of course.

Anybody knows who won this tour?
1-2. Eros Riccio and David Evans are joined first as they could not decide on a play-off date (really...).
3. MiG29 (=Fulcrum2000)
3. MiG29 (=Fulcrum2000)
Join first?
Does it mean they share the prize money?
BTW, congrats on a great tour.

yes
This is correct we both ran into scheduling problems so it was decided to share the first place rather than force one player to not play due to scheduling problems.
I myself will not be entering any more freestyle until arno trys out the old format of weekend play which he has said could be april/may time so i will wait until then to continue.
But i must say i was on good form shame i could not make much week day playtimes..

Hi!
Can I ask you the favor to compile a direct pgn of the games to download so I can open them directly within my ipad2 chess viewer since I am not close to an "normal" OS where I can extract rar files.
Thank you !

I also lost after playing risky chess because of tournament situation I need to play for a win. I was outplayed and well done by my opponent. I saw some games and some players are lucky to have easy wins.
