bummer. may be that a large pgn makes crashes more likely. i am making a backup pgn file now. odd that it happened for both of us as fritz / chessbase rarely crashes for me or corrupts analysis.

This is getting murkier all the time, position very unclear.

beatiful and difficult position

I'm following every move. Fascinating game! If I could choose a side a play as, it'd be White.
What makes this game especially 'fascinating' is that black/Matt is indeed "crazy enough" to play for a win (=black setting up complications) against NATIONAL and on its way therefore showing so many "human" moves... still the opening advantage white got due black's passitivity was so decent that its current aiming for a win (semi-open c-line) is just natural to me...
What opening advantage? I challenge you to find it for me.
well,if we play at WBCCC 2,and me playing white pieces, would you play that opening again?lets say exactly the same first 8 moves?...so we can continue playing from that point
Maybe yes, maybe no. If I find a way for White to play for two results (win/draw), then no.
However, I don't think White gets any advantage objectively at any point after 5.Bc4 so I would consider playing it again. In general I don't like to play the same positions twice. But I will think on it when the time comes.

ok...i will also you again if we meet and me playing white, and if you agree,we can play the same 8 first moves (i think that are the opening, and none plan played for none player),and if you agree,we can play, and if you dont agree,we can play other opening
Well, first of all: When white wins (or better as we're here speaking about presents: black loses), and i'm pretty sure it does in this game, it is always right(/wrong) as it doesn't matter how you win(/lose) as long as you win(/lose)!... having said this, i think that white's play from move 3-9 can be considerably improved on, but -as i already have written above- in my opinion white failed to attack black's weak king-side and therefore got now a little annoyance on this side as punishment in return... still in the mean time it conquered the c-line, has a decent a/b-pawn on the queenside and will finish black on the 7th rank soon... and as much as i admire entertaining play, to me its just "crazy" playing such things against players of NATIONAL's resources&strength! :-) Edit: And when you click through your opponents black-games you will realize that -while having great computing&database-resources available- he still plays pretty conservative&drawing openings like Marshall, QID and so on... simply because correspondence chess on this level doesn't allow sub-optimal black openings (white can nearly play everything in the first moves and still draw...)... and to me the whole Hippo -and similar approaches of asking to get just run-over- are just busted branches in the global opening-tree.
Hello again!
White can play anything on his first move and draw. That is almost the case for Black too; minus the cases Black drops a pawn on move 1.
I like my position. Against a player such as Paul, it's ideal. I know that Paul is an excellent player, but in these complicated positions, he may have made a few inaccuracies; at a few points I could have played differently, but so far as I am aware, my moves seem to be fully justified objectively on each move. We shall see. I play dynamic chess – sure, a mistake can lose the game but I have some chances and life is too short not to have fun - and my methods have been working okay this tournament thus far it seems; perhaps I may not be taking much risk at all. I play for fun, and to learn, and three results are possible, it's great. Such complicated positions are enormously entertaining for me - no piece trades yet. I have extensive preparation in these positions, which make my chances to gain advantage and initiative more likely than normal.
Objectively, to my knowledge - and if you feel differently, that is fine and your choice, of course - the hippo is not busted, it's a +/= position in some circumstances, so I only play the hippo under very select circumstances in which White does not get a +/= position. It is particularly difficult for players to play against it because structurally Black has no targets and White has to make concessions to create one. It is a nuanced opening, yet not objectively a sub-optimal one according to my analysis - White has more options than normal, but Black has the resources on each to equalize; the positions may look passive to the observer, but often, they are full of dynamic potential. I thought it a good choice against Paul because the engines are only useful for checking the lines you look at; the nuances and the best moves often have to be found manually; the computer will often miss Black's resources. Additionally we are breaking new theoretical ground; it is pleasant to simply play chess. There are psychological advantages also; the opponent may get overconfident or discouraged. I am familiar with the structures that stem from the Modern systems; both sides have many possibilities. True, the Modern is a highly intricate system, requires a great deal of creativity and innovation, and understanding of how to play various pawn structures; yet, to me, these are all attractive elements of chess. For more information on the system I am playing, you can check out the book Tiger's Modern on this system (from which I derived some of my theory on the Modern), which has analysis of the most excellent quality, written by a 2600 player who plays these systems regularly.
In correspondence chess, the opening has to be understood to know the draw lines nowadays; for instance had I played 12.g5 in my other game against Ruben, it would be a draw. I think some of the top players do sometimes occasionally play sub-optimal openings, but a second-rate opening is sometimes good enough for a draw or better, given a little help and/or excellent technique; the chess engines have made more chess positions more easily drawable.
I am not interested in a book draw, if somebody plays the Marshall against me and hopes for a draw, that's their choice - but I will make them work for it, if possible; in sum, I just want to play the best chess I can and learn and have fun while doing it. :-) My philosophy of chess is different than yours on the Modern, I guess, White has many possibilities and Black is doing well on all of them IMO given that you know how to find your way; the statistics are interesting but the objective value is the key.

now game is well over.(Draw as you know).
I would welcome your comments on play by both sides.
For the benifit of new members,HEM is Shahar who when he bothered was the top player on playchess and beat Lukas cluster on some occasions,he also beat Rybka forum team.
Also only just missed a draw against Kasparov in a 5 min game last year.
I have highest respect for him and will try to refute any ideas he puts forward in play.
Take your time Shaher,i think this was toughest game i have ever played.

may take my time here, have two plans of action, can only play one.
most likely will decide by late friday, maybe on thursday, or maybe tonight, depends how the analysis works out.

In the long term white has the advantage with the protected pass pawn on a5. But with all the pawns on the white kingside, he has to be careful. Knowing Matt, he has probably looking for a draw line just in case. He sees his attack does work.
This could easily be the game of the round.
some vague thoughts on the position as i have said little up to now,i dont play KI so was unfamiliar with the strength of blacks attack despite SR showing me a couple of years ago,i never followed it up.
i dont think black can raise enough fire power to bust through on Kingside, rememember the King can be a good defensive piece as well.In some variations blacks pieces get in each others way and a locked central pawn structure is a double edged weapon.i now have my passed pawn on a5,25.cxb5 was a free move for me.
Just a few thoughts and i may well be wrong about my assessment of the position and no doubt Matt wishes to prove me wrong, its certainly a great game and engines are of little help apart from helping you not making tactical mistakes.
Not quite as boring as some of you guys thought.

After he played ..1.g6 I knew you was in for a battle.
i am looking at board in future positions which may occur and believe my artillery can switch quicker to queenside.Maybe this should be on trash talk thread.
don't worry i'll set traps along the way... i'll let you think you are winning
i am going to set the game on fire now, all the way until the endgame.
no doubt,i will be very very careful i do not underestimate you.you could yet win this game and make me suffer my first loss at corr chess.
same to you. my concrete analysis has some history of flaws, but i have improved on my methods. all i will say is that it will be a tough fight these next moves and i've seen pretty deeply and the position could get really weird. i will just play the position.
I will give you this much credit.
I doubt Paul would have thought he had this position in front of him when you played ...1.g6 and got this decent looking KID. I still wonder if Paul had to do it again, if he would have chosen a different white setup. If he had to do it again.

as you said i wasn't expecting this, all my other AN has just flown out of the window. Its a decent move and looks brilliant looking at the board.Lets see what happens.
the complications are astounding i assure you.
This is shaping into the game of the round, and maybe the best ever on WBCCC. What a position!
This is one of the beat games in CC history. Well done to you both.
Its a great game, but lets not get to carried away there is a lot of cc history.
i think its "last chance saloon" on your part, but will admit i haven't yet looked deeply at position.
Lots of fun anyway.

that's the king's indian for you.
i expect you are banking on g3.Lets see what happens,i have already said Qg5 was a decent move.
hi i did not say i was winning, but hope i can null your attack.great game.

True. If I don't facilitate a breakthrough, as you know, positionally black is busted, what with my weak b-pawn and your passed a-pawn. It was a bit funny to me though that you mentioned I lacked firepower on the Kingside with Qg5 on the way; I thought for sure you saw that idea coming. I guess with so many candidate moves and pieces, such a move is easy to miss.
Hi,
I expected Schachmatt to play Qg5 rather than say g3 at that point from what he had been saying, it also keeps a lot of tension in the position and still has all the moves such g3, Nh4 or Rg8 available but who knows in what order (Maybe Matt
) .... Blacks position looks aggressive and really nice but as we all know looks can be decieving, on the lighter side if Paul could magically make all the pieces vanish that `a` pawn wins the game hahaha
Regards

well i did see Qg5 but thought i could hold it ok.Maybe wrong.
Qg5 completely natural in these positions black can just position his pieces then attack or wait for white to make a mistake as black is safe enough here.
this position was unexpected from your opening...really beautyful position
