Interesting first move Matt, but if I had to guess he may take his chances vs the Modern/Pirc lines. If nothing else you are going to make him think about it.
Thanks Jimmy. The idea is to try to get positions that are better than normal positions in the Sicilian, KID, French or Ruy Lopez depending on how White plays, although there are some positions unique to the Modern defense. Additionally I have studied these positions in great detail, especially these past few months, and these positions particularly require knowledge and the resources for analyzing these positions are less reliable than normal. Also asymmetrical positions are often quite possible, but the positions that generally arise are semi-closed, and quite nuanced. And because I've consulted some of the literature, such as it exists, and have studied these positions quite thoroughly, it's simply easier for me to play a semi-closed game, than the immensely complicated positions that I obtained last year in all of my Black games. I've worked out many positions in normal openings very deeply so they are somewhat less interesting for me, whereas there is plenty of new ground to be broken here. Besides, if Black wishes to have the opportunity to attain winning chances, to play a semi-closed position in which the lines have not been deeply worked out in theory is paramount. If White plays c4, Black has a fine alternative to the normal systems against 1.d4. In the lines I have prepared, I do not think White attains any real advantage, Black attains counterplay, and in I would say 70-80% of the lines also able to keep a lot of material on the board and attain a lively game.

5...Nf6?? loses by force or nearly loses by force (the threat is ^Qe2 and e5), the best Black can get is a miserable ending that probably loses by force. I expect that Paul is well aware of this because I played this blunder a few days ago when I mixed up my lines --- on 4.Bc4 Nf6 is best. IMO 5.Bc4 is equal 2nd or 3rd best move in this position; however, we will likely see a transposition into some of the critical variations characteristic of the ...a6 Modern.
5.Bc4 Nf6 6.Qe2 Nc6 7.e5 Nd7 8.Bxf7+ Kxf7 9.e6+ Ke8 10.exd7+ Bxd7 does indeed leave a really ugly position:

I think that White has an improvement on that line somewhere. In any case, it's ugly for Black.
The two moves I was thinking about here were ...e6 and ...b5, however ...b5 may have been met by Bd5!? inducing c6 with a slight plus for White IMO.

Black with 38.9% and 26.5% draws.
Bc4 is the fashionable move in the last years, comparing with the other two possible squares for white bishop. I slightly prefer 5.a4 here, although Paul must have enough reasons...
White can play anything and be okay, and has 3 or 4 moves that test Black's setup. Lines with a4 and Bc4 can transpose. I would contend that c4 is not the best square for the White bishop yet I consider Bc4 to be one of the critical tests.

i was expecting 5...b5 but admit you had a number of choices,i am a well known follower of fashion.
Patience or prudence is key in these positions for Black while the structure is not fixed and Black is still developing, and White's best play involves transposing into lines in which I am well-prepared.
b5 was my #1 move, but e6 was #2 and playable as well as most popular. I show white with 60.5% and 22.5% draws. The latter number suggests this is a very "human" position.
Quite a few humans do not know what they are doing in these positions.
b5 can by force to a position in which Black has an extended pawn chain on dark squares, which is a slightly passive position to play although very playable - Black seems to be holding quite reliably.
On principle, according to the literature I have perused, with the bishop on c4 in a Modern, Black does not want to play b5 early to tempo to the bishop, to play this move solely for this tempo is not enough of a concession to justify this move. With the game move, Black is guaranteed counterplay or equality. Maybe against every White try here Black eventually fully equalize, I do not know, but that's in part what I wish to find out. The move I chose will lead to positions in which the chess computers will love White's space advantage in the short term to a +0.6-1.0 assessment, although in reality White's advantage is rather less, otherwise some players rated 2600+ and even 2700+ would probably not play this stuff. However White plays, Black will eventually get counterplay given very accurate play because White has to make concessions in space to try to break through Black's solid structure.

Somehow i fear that the progress of this game will show us that you're also part of this group :-)... maybe one should remind you that you're here not playing neighbor's 8year-old but a senior correspondence chess-player with decent(!) resources... believe me, white will run over your passitivity in NO time, with absolutely NO black counterplay at all...
"otherwise some players rated 2600+ and even 2700+ would probably not play this stuff."
Well, they play it because the complexity provides decent chances for both sides - without computes, with computers it provides decent chances for white only...

We'll see. I'm about a 2100 player over the board, but my analysis derives from the literature of players much stronger than myself and I've studied and checked this analysis, some positions more thoroughly, my database and my brain for ideas, and the chess engine to check them. Black is not reduced to passivity here, quite the contrary, I think; it's prophylactic development. It's true that White has so many plans however, and Black probably wishes to play differently against each one, so it's not very easy to play practically. White has no very good pawn breaks at the moment, the result is that I will have time to develop.
In many lines outside of Sicilian positions and the Modern I would surmise that Paul quite likely has better experience and knowledge than me. Openings study is something I have only invested time and effort in quite recently. However I have a pretty good idea where this position will likely go, having studied it in detail in the time just before this tournament, plus I've played it before, although usually in bullet games online and also against the computer.
Optically White's position looks imposing, but I have not seen the precedent to translate it to more than a nominal advantage - I know that Paul is an excellent analyst so I am very interested in what he comes up with. I'm playing the way I'm playing because it's less easy to find the correct resources here especially since many options are possible and there are many pieces on the board; I think it is invaluable to learn how to play against different pawn structures in the Modern, the positions are very rich in new ideas --- my study here of Modern opening against all White setups is comprehensive, but there are many middlegame positions that I have not assessed beyond 'complicated, but Black has good and lasting counterchances', including the system that White has played. It helps that have experience in the KID and Sicilian, and occasionally the French, there are many similarities in Black's goals - I have some reference points. Part of my plan is that I can hopefully trick White into a worse than normal position relative to a more common opening. Additionally the challenges in calculating concrete variations --- much easier here than the positions that I attained last year with Black, which were as complicated as any position I've ever analyzed.
I do have a bad habit of playing for complications for the sake of complications on occasion. However according to my understanding of chess my decisions thus far are completely justified and I am intrigued to see how the middlegame evolves, the plans for both sides should become clear from about move 14 onwards.

there was some very bad play from database players to lose from this position as white.Blacks position may well be defendable but Matts ideas were wrong i believe,Just my opinion unless all he wants is the draw, even then i feel b5 at some point would have made blacks game easier.Just my opinion of course and Matt may yet prove me wrong.i have a number of choices here and it will take some time to decide what i believe will be best move.
game is still very complex with all pieces still on the board but i prefer my position.
