maybe.

Well, as you scored a whooping +0 =0 -5 (=0.0%) against the top half of the table in WBCCC, everything else than predicting a comfortable 1-0 (question is just how many moves NATIONAL will need) would be unserious imo... but take this as motivation (Schach)Matt! ;-)

I think I have read Matt has improved his repertoire a lot. No doubt starting the tournament against Paul with black is not a comfortable beginning.

Studying Matt's games I am pretty sure he knows where are the problems and how to fix them.

Last year the only game I was at a disadvantage in the opening was against Sebi.  Had I allowed transposition into a Scheveningen, it's a balanced game - there is nothing better than to allow this transposition although to play the queen's knight to d7 is always interesting as is characteristic of a Najdorf (as is Pb5, Pe5).  Against Weirwindle I had a better way to play the opening position, because as the game developed near the end, I should play c3 and the heavy pieces come off and its a draw, white's 2 v 1 queenside advantage is nothing, and the same against Uly when I did play opening better, but failed to take my chance for advantage.  The problem for me last year was in technique, I had to take more time and use DPA better in positions that were all quite complicated.  Plus I rejected very acceptable positions in a few games without good enough reason, at the very least I should have taken more time, which in part cost me in half of my games when I made mistakes.  At the moment, I'm quite content with the state of my repertoire in the Scheveningen-Najdorf complex and in the KID.  It's not simple to find good new or rare ideas for Black in many of these positions, but in a few instances I have succeeded, but already deeply into very established lines.  And given I have studied some other structures deeply and have some good ideas for Black that seem quite promising for counterplay from analysis and literature, but often overlooked in practice, I will be playing some different stuff this year, which I have sometimes been playing over the board, too.  As I have not found ways for White to sustain meaningful advantage in the lines I intend, or kill off the game quickly in at least 80% of my repertoire, and in the long term Black gets good counterplay, then I am happy to give Paul a chance to improve on my analysis.  In the last year, I've built a comprehensive repertoire, so I expect to be prepared deeper than my opponent in many positions.  As I see it, Paul will either contribute to my theory in some very unexpected way, or I will make White prove a draw.  In my opinion a small space advantage in the opening for White comes to nothing given that Black takes the appropriate prophylactic measures, and the literature, practice, and computer-aided analysis seem to bear this out.  I went through all the games last year that were relevant to my repertoire.  I expect to greatly enjoy this game.  We shall see!

I like your point of view about the opening Matt. Actually c3 is almost forced draw.

I will follow your games very close.

Good luck!

I believe that my books had me ahead in the opening after 10. Be3 in our game.
I wish I still had all of my analysis for our game, but I somehow lost it. Too bad, it was ~80,000 positions, each of high quality 30 second analysis.
At least I still have everything from Dave Evans, Gino, Ppipper, Fulcrum, National, and Banned for Life (my favorite game).
I would say that they are good enough momentos for the tourney.

actually i ended up losing my analysis of our game sometime mid-game - and had to do a lot of it over again during the game; it's a bummer losing all that hard work. 80,000 positions, that's a lot --- i've read somewhere you have to know ~10,000 positions really well to be master.  kind of surprised what your books say, because my resources say the white has only the slightest of edges on the most accurate play, but practically white usually does very well here.  the approach with 10.be3, white is only slightly better according to my analysis before the game, and nothing i saw during the game really changed my assessment on this, except that white's advantage was even smaller than i thought it was, both sides had many options and it looked +/=/= pretty much the whole way through, although probably there were some small inaccuracies somewhere move 11-20.  had i played 20.qd2 my position would have been marginally better but it is always a corr draw.   one of my key stem games is anand-timman i believe, although there i think 10...rc8?! was played.  in the approach with ...a6 and ...bd7 in the rauzer approx moves 6/7 white should play f4, in move 9 in our game i believe, as i did later against uly, and theoretically black isn't doing so great.

you had a great tournament - so hopefully the lessons you learned aid your future chess.  your game with banned for life, i thought that was one of the most interesting games of the tournament, plus these opposite side castling positions are fun to play.

Thanks Turbo for the encouragement, and statistically you're exactly right.  However, I do not think that is a normal result for me in future.

Matt, you sound very motivated to show a strong play in WBCCC 2012... that's good news! :-), indeed it would be great for the tournament -especially you're own one- when you could extract a (half)point out of this game vs. NATIONAL... i wish you good luck doing so!

How about this: Paul, get ready in case we face each other because I have planned to get a winning position against you in 16 moves

I played my first game against a bone-fide GM today and got a draw with the black pieces. It was in the freestyle going on at infinity chess, 60 + 15. GM Lutz, former German national Champion! Eros, Suj, GM Arno Nickel and others all watched the whole game.

I bring this up as a high point in my chess career, because in this tournament, I will probably hit a few low points...
Parent - - By Schachmatt (****) [us] Date 2012-02-03 02:55
Great!

I drew probably what should have been a relatively easy win with White in the freestyle yesterday, given I was up +1-1.5 for 50 moves, up a pawn with the better position and pieces.  But a few inaccuracies and Black gets counterplay so then it's my choice how I want to draw.  OMG, I just realized, I played against you, didn't I ???  I'm Sunnytown on that server.  Yeah, Lutz lost yesterday a rook ending because he didn't use tablebases, but it's great you drew him today with Black, he's an expert in the Najdorf and in the KID.  I play him with Black in the final found, looking forward to that.
Parent - - By Scott (****) Date 2012-02-03 13:29
 Yes, I knew I was playing you. I was trying to keep my identity a secret for that tournament, but somehow Eros found out, I don't know how...it seems like Eros knows all, sees all.

My game with you caused me to take a different line against Lutz. I knew nothing about him. But I agree, you had me on the ropes. The main move where I think you had much better was 35. Ne4, I was happy about that, it let me back into the game. 35. b4! and I am pretty much toast.
Parent - - By Schachmatt (****) [us] Date 2012-02-03 16:48
Actually I thought the game was already drawn by then, for sure I will be analyzing that game more thoroughly later.  Until Rh2 was prep, I should not have taken any time at all for 16 moves because I've already thoroughly studied the positions.  The h5 line I think was quite a good choice against Lutz, it seemed to me you equalized without problems, then it got a bit tricky late, but I suppose Black was always holding fine.  No easy games ahead, I'm going to play some double-edged stuff now, see if I can get a good opening position again and try to manage my time a bit better.
Parent - By Schachmatt (****) [us] Date 2012-02-03 19:05 Edited 2012-02-03 19:37
Managed to get a losing position in 5 (!) moves.  It was a beginner's mistake I would not have made in an OTB game - too much material at my disposal and didn't really use my brain to assess his ideas.  However, I was overthinking things about similar positions and Black's principle plans and was disconcerted by a move order not familiar to me and reacted in an irrational way.  I was worried about getting a position that is worse than in the main lines, but that was exactly what happened!  A rare lesson but a good one.

Anyone knows who is StephanieX?
I wanna know whom I defeated, lol.  That would still stand, perhaps the best ever game played by me :)
I do not possess the knowledge which you guys have.  Coz, i hate remembering openings and stuff.  I still confront my database after 1.e4 c5 2.?? (haha).  But, i adopt my own freaky innovative approaches all the time.  Sincerely, I lack the knowledge about the openings and other stuff.  Especially, I do not even care to read beyond 2nd line of what people post (for e.g. as Schachmatt did).  Because, I simply forget what I read in the previous line and all this stuff just irritates me, forcing me to take a break, lol.
Since I read all this, it's time for a 15 min break :p

In this years edition II there seems to be no real very weak player in the field, which is good for the tournament. :-) Still already round 1 shows that there is a lot of luck involved in getting "thankful" pairings - one gets not-so-challenging opponents while others get much stronger (but somehow underrated) ones. While later might -due not being able to fully score in the first round- get "more thankful" ones in round 2, this will involve just another gulp of (pairing&ratings-)luck... :-) Thankfully playing 12 instead of 10 games will help eroding a little of this "luck-noise"...
