Good luck. I will be applying the lesson's you have taught me.

Nothing could make me happier than loosing a game against my own pupils... :-)  now seriously, i sadly cannot teach nothing to anyone, I just give my own advices and recommendations, but not lessons.

We can make post mortem analysis if you would like.

Enjoy our game and good luck!

Since his the reigning champ I strongly believe he will uphold the french defense as his main weapon. I'm playing it too against Sebi .

Jose plays the french quite well!
Parent - - By Turbo (***) Date 2012-02-04 23:46
The fascinating thing seeing him playing the French is how he a) can manage to turn the board against opponents who fail to find a "good enough" plan and/or b) how he manages to "talk them" into serious blunders/dubious piece-sacrifices like we have seen last year... therefore i think its -even having chances playing for a win- THE perfect choice for this first round game again. Go José go!!! :-)
Parent - - By Wrath of the Titans (****) [ph] Date 2012-02-05 01:03
Thanks for the tip turbo
Parent - - By Turbo (***) Date 2012-02-05 01:36 Edited 2012-02-05 03:52
;-), its part of the big master-plan to talk you out of those frightening sacrifices French-players consider so dangerous! *g*
Parent - - By Wrath of the Titans (****) [ph] Date 2012-02-05 01:54
Dunno but I have no idea of any thematic or frightening sacrifices in french.

There are billions of them, starting with the poisoned pawn in the Winawer up to 17.Bxh6!/20.Nxh6+!!...

Thank you all very much for your comments. This will not be the last time I do french during this tour.

> i have limited experience against french. Let see how it goes.

I will take this comment with a bit of salt, I am sure I will have to fight really hard even to get 1/2 point out of this game, once you have decided to play e4 knowing my last edition perfomance in this opening.

Hope we get an interesting game!

No . His opponents play as white very poor.

I am ready to play him. If he plays french Good for me!!. Before that I once played him and I was black and I played french. Draw. He knows him better.
Remember that The credit for wins mostly goes to the opponents not the winner. You better brush up your ideas.
Drawing is easy, Forcing a win is difficult. But winning when opponent plays like kamikaze is no credit.
Like David had a draw in his last Game but he didn't go for it. As per theory in an equal position one loses when tries anything different.
Parent - - By Wrath of the Titans (****) [ph] Date 2012-02-06 10:26
OM i disagree with this one. The champ played exceptional chess and he win games, give him the respect which is due to him. He has technique and most of all he share his ideas.
Parent - - By Master Om (*****) [in] Date 2012-02-06 11:21
As usual You are again misinterpreting. In french Had white "played safe" then his opening and his skills would have still lead to draw. No wins and its easy in french.
Parent - - By ppipper (*****) [es] Date 2012-02-06 12:15
may I ask you which opening / defence would you recommend to play with black in centaur chess against 1.e4 systems, instead of ...e6? Needless to say that the main goal is beating your opponent, as in every defense (french included)
Parent - - By Master Om (*****) [in] Date 2012-02-06 12:28
When two players play correctly its draw irrespective of openings. So My theory is not for the opening system, its to the player you playing.
Chess is a game of human errors. No errors no loss. So when aided with engines the error margin and psychological aspect of chess dies. Takes the charm out of chess.
Still there are players who know opponents/and his engine's weakness and play accordingly. In centaur games when time is a factor a well analysed move is always the key.
So in that sense you choose your opening which mostly avoids early exchanges of major / minor pieces , involves a lots of pawn moves and bit strategical and exchange sacrifice possible positions.
So in that way caro-kan must be suiting you as your "Idol" is a legend using that and why you know that. Caro-Kan is the modified and better french without the french weakness.
A opening is bad when one can exploit it. So for me its relative.
Parent - - By ppipper (*****) [es] Date 2012-02-06 12:54
Thanks for your answer. So, your recommendation would be playing 1.e4 c6! as the best opening for black in this kind of tournament.

One amazing thing I like about chess is that I still think that currently almost every opening is almost playable at all time controls and chess style. Even Nelson's valuable statistics are still less valuable when it come to certain openings, because they have not been analsysed /played enough at GM level, therefore at corr chess, therefore at computer chess, and so on.

IMHO nobody takes risks unnecesary, and nobody blunders a move wanting to blunder, and nobody miss analysis wanting to miss it... As I see it, chess is strategy game and forcing your opponent to take a wrong decision is ok with the game. All black defences more or less play with these factors and fight for the chance of counter attack, nothing more, nothing less.

One of the....as its very flexible. Can transpose to french or slav.

Everything is playable but not winnable.

Thats the plan but aided with engines its too difficult. If an opponent plays for a safe game its hard for other opponent to win the game.

In a major tournament, Rubenstein was asked, who do you play tonight? He answered, "tonight I play against the Black pieces."

Thats why Lasker Always won in most matches against him (Except specially the 2 games where he beat Capa and Lasker with the same move to same square with same result!!!) as
Lasker suggested "Play the player not the board"

My pleasure, natmaku.

In the way I see all of this tournament, overall strategy is also very important, as well as following some people's games. I hope you don't mind.

I will post Nfd7 in a while. Ng8, recommended as a SOS weapon may not be a good idea in corr game although it has been played a number of times. There are also some Petrosian games.

After Nfd7 we will see if my opponent decides to stay in (paper) books or prefer to deviate not answering f4
