Good question! Here in my analysis I had 16...Rae8! as drawing, while after 16...Bxg3 hxg3 my scores kept going up uncontrollably. Though maybe the position could have been defended differently (like for instance, 17...h6) the passed d pawn and Rook+Queen battery on the h file seemed critical.

Thanks you for the game! I saw the pawn sac 9...f5 wasn't not much worse than other moves, so I decided to give it a shot and trade the pawn for initiative. I wonder if Nelson had the move already in his database?

plus eight higher-quality server games dating back to 18.03.2000, which is the date I have for the earliest game with f5.  So 37 were engine games and 11, we can presume, were human.

Given the mix of human-engine games in my database this ratio tilts toward the "mostly an engine move" side.

Thanks for the game deka! You were unlucky that I was prepared for 9...f5 as I had analyzed and discarded it for my game against Sebastian Boehme.
