Thanks for your answer.
What does it more presisely means ?
Are there specific issues related to code or is it just that Vas cannot spend as much time as you would have expected on it or else ?
> Things are going slower than I expected.
I hope, that you and we will not get many more of such surprises. (A small amount might be OK and normal to Rybka-customers, approved over several years)
in 1980, i was a killer for chesschallenger voice...on the board...in 30 moves...

OMG, I had that weird-talking Fidelity chunk of wood, too!
Bert Gower and I worked together for years on Cray Blitz (and the earlier blitz). And we started a local chess club at USM. And we organized tournaments and took turns directing them, etc. Bert bought a super constellation at some point, and we used to use it as a sparring partner for Cray Blitz when we were testing on a much slower Vax. And we found a particular opening where we could win a piece outright, in something like 15 moves. No big deal. But we had a 2200+ player at USM that was extremely "serious" about chess and he played in the club. In one tournament, our once a year "club championship" we ended up with an odd number of players, and Bert and I talked "him" (name protected to protect the guilty) into agreeing to add the superconny. We were doing a 6 round event, one game each meeting for 6 weeks. The three of us were the threats to win the event, with the competition being fairly equal. And now, as Paul Harvey would say, "the rest of the story."
"he" was paired against the super-conny and lost. :) I drew with him, and bert lost to him. So ignoring the superconny games, I had one draw, bert had one loss, and "he" had one draw. He played the superconny, as I mentioned, and lost. I played and beat it easily. As did bert. I finished first, Bert second and "he" finished third. And that ended it. Until he looked at the games and noticed we both played exactly the same moves up to move 15, where we won the piece, and then we diverged in how the game finished. He was livid. We were laughing. And no more computers in the tournaments, either? Else "he" would not play. :)
Ah, the good old days with computer shenanigans everywhere. :)
I have another one: I was 13 or so when I got my Fidelity VCC. It spoke. Like coming from hell. It was German speaking monster. So, when people would come to my parents home, I would wait untill the conversation calmed, and suddenly plugged the machine, it would start loudly "Hallo, Ich bin die Voice Chess Challenger von Fidelity, ihre electoniche Schachfreund." Or something like that. I don't know if it sounded any better in English, but its German sucked, and would freeze the blood in visitor bodies.
You should improve your chess !
There have been already many complains here about that.
Did it change something ? No, not IMHO.
It is obvious that the hardcore fans posting here are not as important than the overall business Vas is driving today.
I remember the good old days when Rybka 1 was released as a bomb and we had monthly if not weekly updates !
We really had the feeling to participate to something special ! And so we did !
Also as of today, it seems with all these "clone" stories ongoing that even the Rybka Forum is not a nice place to be for Vas....
Anyhow, I wish we could go back to the good old times (R1) but believe this time is over and that we have to turn to other products. (i.e. Komodo & Co)
I wish good luck to Vas and will purchase this time R5 only if it is stronger than Houdini 2.
I did it wrong when I blindly purchased R4 based on Vas history but finaly find out that it was only a "small" improvement compared to R3
rgds to all
yes, these were the golden oldy days, when we knew that shortly before XMas all the three leading progs got an update, although it was about robbing a bit money from all of us for almost nothing. Basically it wasnt the programmers promoting this but a business like Chessbase. They even do it now although no new Fritz is existing, so they offer the update together with the Premium Offer of Playchess. Only for 6 months.
All that changed some 6 years ago. Suddenly we got Rybka who was 400 Elo points stronger than all the other commercial offers (that was when Fritz went on senior retreat). Rybka didnt just beat the crap out of all other progs but for the first time we chessplayers had a super GM at home. Of course that changed our life. Shredder or Fritz were good, but they didnt know to play chess. Let's skip the propaganda Kasparov made in favor of Fritz or Junior. It was commercial hoax.
Let me ask you a question: did you ever see a GM chessplayer appear shortly before XMas and claiming his value only to impress organizers? No no, that did never happen. That was the epidemic nonsense brought into chess by greedy guys of computerchess, who themselves were no true chessplayers at all. Natural born or educated chessplayers so to speak.
THe only chessplayer among all the machines promoters is the genial programmer Vasik Rajlich, nobody else.
That caused many depressions and nervous breakdowns among the XMas greedy exploitators. The rest is known. They decided to charakter assassinate Vas. Plus they decided to overflood us with copies of Rybka. You understand? If they couldnt have their greed satisfied why should they allow Vas to be creative? So they hired slaves who R/E in yearlong attempts to get the secrets of Rybka but no, that didnt succeed.
So the sex-doctor of ICGA had the next idea. What, if they could prove that Vas slapped his old grandma in Poland? The plan was, that with such a record Vas could no longer be allowed to participate in the ICGA. In other words they advanced a life ban. They blackmailed Vas, either he gave them the secrets of his Rybka or they would forbid Rybka completely. If they could no longer milk the cow then also Vas wouldnt have a chance.
But that nonsense caused Vas to ignore the ICGA with this sex-doctor. As a chessplayer he knows that chessplayers buy everything that could help them to play better chess than others. Hence the best training tool will always lead the sells.
So, that meant Waterloo for the intrigant evil greedy and what the Collins dictionary called unprincipled characters or in German as a classic there is a term called charakterschwein who manifested itself in the evil plot of writing open letters and in as I said character assassination. Of course all decent chessplayers will detest such wrong behavior.
Vas is a creative programmer who doesnt go into such dirty matters, he remains silent at home and creates new and better tools for the chess world.
Do you now understand why the question is so empty why Vas doesnt run around in circles and insults his rivals etc? He doesnt need such nonsense. This is the answer. If questions remain please ask.
Why are you talking about Xmas and all that stuff ?
This has nothing to do with what we are talking about.
I guess my point of view is a little different than yours. I really could careless about weekly or monthly updates and probably would not even bother reading them. Just let me know once the product is pretty close to being released.
I wish there would be more interaction.... But hey to give you a point, he is not less communicating than the others expect maybe Larry.
> But hey to give you a point, he is not less communicating than the others expect maybe Larry.
The problem we have is that we were 'spoilt' back in the days of Rybka 1-3 when we used to get little newsflashes every couple of days.
However, I really wish programmers would catch onto this and write a blog or something, just a sentence per fortnight giving us a clue as to how it's going.
I understand that the close releases Vas applied was very demanding and likely stressful, but do also believe the the tempo today of less than one release per Year with close to 0 feedback is not the good model.
It's worse than that! In the Rybka 1 days we would frequently get more than one new build in a single day! Don't like your performance at Playchess? Try a newer build! That was nirvana...
That's what I meant by lack of interactions or communications between his loyal fans and chess fans in general, which is not only unacceptable, but bad for his business model. And he doesn't have to make progress updates and builds like he used to (although some may beg to differ, I prefer it actually) he should just inform us at least once or twice a month to let people know confidently that he's still up to something otherwise he'll lose not only his customers but his loyal fanbase that's been with him since Rybka 1, which he wouldn't want to happen obviously. That's my take on it though.
So far I'm getting the impression that he doesn't care about it as much these days or it's just not important to him, anymore. I'm not saying he should do what he did back then because I understand he's not able to now as times for him may be busier before the christmas sales, (and not spending time with family is tough) but at least regularly make updates on his project via a blog or twitter or something alike because we deserve to know as customers or fans if he wants us to keep coming back... not leave them hanging, desiring and then find out in the end to be disappointed. We deserve to know because everyone's been patient enough with him.
Bye bye ICGA. The kingdom of progress in computerchess does happen on a different playground with creative generations of motivated people without hindering bureaucracy whose members eat hamburgers for 30 $ a piece.
> I hate these cloners and fakers, whiners, openletterwriters, blackmailers, imposters and hypocrits. Total boycott so far.
> If Vas would always read such a stinking shit like yours, his creativity would vanish.
Lol then go ahead and keep waiting, don't cry and say I didn't tell you so... his reputation today has already vanished because of the sole reasons I've outlined, and I only want him to continue working on Rybka, otherwise they're not going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future for any chess enthusiasts.
> That is exactly the reason why an artist like him stays away.
This is exactly why Chessbase hasn't renewed his contract, because they don't know if he's coding and wasn't notified in the past year about his business prospects. Being ignorant outside the circle is worst, especially if you assume without knowing anything. And that's everyone's biggest mistake atm.
> True chessplayers who expect a new Rybka 5 know from 4 version numbers that Vas delivers when he's ready. But to distribute weekly reports would totally destroy his talents.
I don't think you read any one of my post properly or the fact you just don't understand. When was the last time Vas said anything openly about Rybka 5? Anything, and I mean ANYTHING at all. Has he personally said there was going to be a Rybka 5 and a possible working release date? No. He's been kept too busy avoiding the scene lately and this just shows how ignorant you wannabes are. I'm sorry to burst your bubble but be realistic about it and don't assume anything we don't know, you can say true chess players know there will be a Rybka 5 when you don't know it, but even true chess fans that's been around the scenes for a long time uses common sense.
Like I said I'm not convinced not until he announces it and tells us that's he's working on something, whether or not that's the next Rybka engine we don't know. And secondly I never said for him to distribute weekly reports, again you misread my posts or maybe you're just too ignorant to read, I said for him to update his fans via social networking sites like facebook or twitter about his progress, as in what he's up to or if he's currently working on a project to begin with etc. This won't destroy his reputation he's not sharing his work, but simply letting people know what he's doing!
If you're blind and stupid enough to think Bob would improve Crafty by saying "Working on programming Rybka 5" for example then you're more retarded than I thought. We shouldn't even be having this discussion if that's the case, I don't want to have an argument or a discussion with narrow-minded people.
> Even those who dont blog at all cant improve because they are all waiting for new stuff for copying from trademark Vas. I'm not willing to lecture about the optimal conditions for creativity because I hate these cloners and fakers, whiners, openletterwriters, blackmailers, imposters and hypocrits. Total boycott so far.
That's another different story, this step is after distribution we don't even know if Vas is working on Rybka 5 yet so how can you predict whether or not he's going to be worrying about his trademark for any of his future products? And usually authors don't try a scheme like that if it doesn't financially benefit their work, and by that I mean logos, ads and even contracts with Convekta and Chessbase. But that's the future, currently I'm talking about the present, it wouldn't even make sense to be worried about that now. And btw learn to read and use spellchecker or something the next time, your sentences doesn't even make sense.
> they are all waiting for new stuff for copying from trademark Vas.
Right on spot Rolf.
The first thing what will happen is to decompile RYBKA5.EXE with the hex-rays decompiler. It's how Rybka was hacked twice, Strelka (2007), Ippolit (2009). Rybka 5 secrets will be on the street and available for everyone within a couple of months. It's the sad state in which computer chess is in anno 2012.
Got permission from Vas to show how it works, see: http://www.top-5000.nl/sourcecode.htm
It also takes away another myth that Vas was unwilling to show his sources.
Likewise the other program to compare it with. Useful if somebody were to do that. Perhaps Hyatt will offer, he likes presenting data to prove his case ........
The C code generated by a decompiler must compile into the same assembly/binary.
The pseudocode used in that one report was the author's rough interpretation in code of the assembly to illustrate the points he was trying to make. The objection is that the interpretation is either incorrect or misleading or what have you. Whether he was way off or spot on or what point in between is the subject of some controversy.
The two are IDENTICAL. Such a statement is beyond dishonest. the source code produced by hex-rays should be semantically equivalent to rybka. It is not because hex-rays did NOT decompile the entire thing. It failed and gave up on something like 75 functions or whatever the errors at the end say... but in general, what hex-rays did, a human can do EXACTLY. In fact, we did... And we didn't "fail" anywhere and have to just give up...
Instead as a decent chessplayer I enjoy the last round of the Gibraltar chess festival with the young swhooting star Hou Yifan who will meet Nigel Short in the ties this afternoon. Commentary by GM Simon Williams. BTW we heard two times a computer being mentioned, both accompanied by loud laughter. One was about Micro Shredder who said something and the other was when Simon mentioned that a computer would see advantage because a pawn is a pawn. He implied but the machine will never understand how humans play chess especially in the final round. Because then your nerves are reigning. Oh my boy, and here I see people who dont know all that but who imposter that they are playing chess with their program against another one. Big sports.
In truth machines have no spirit or moral, but they are fantastic tools for training. However in human chess they are not seriously mentioned at all. As I said two times for micro xseconds in over 4 hours. In talks with Bob however one feels downfraded to the level of bacteria although Bob has no clue of human chess.
Excuse me, but Gibraltar is calling. With webcams and all that. With the sensational Hou.
> So this proves the close neighborhood of Bob and David.

I live about two miles from where they stopped the train in 1963, and drive past that spot on most days.

My 1st boss at the BBC. The manager at Radio Shropshire in 1989 was the 1st reporter to do a piece to camera after the robbery. His claim to fame!
"Yes, the Great Train Robbery was a very serious crime, but 30 years was a ludicrous sentence. For murder in this country there is a mandatory sentence of life in prison but many murderers get so much time off for good behaviour that they are out after as little as 10 years. Given that his sentence was grossly disproportionate to the offence he committed I have a great deal of sympathy for Ron’s decision to escape from Wandsworth."
Funny that Vas was banned for life. And this "sympathy" for an illegal act reminds me of Hyatt's statement about not losing any sleep over the reverse engineerers, a pattern of lawlessness. Rolf's point of putting Bob and David together reminded me of this.
That robbery bridge, I was trapped in the snow there in Jan 2010 taking my daughter to school and a BBC crew did a short interview with me which was aired that day on BBC News (around Jan 10 or so) so I am in your achives somewhere. As a favour for the interview they took care of the recovery service
> As a favour for the interview they took care of the recovery service
oh god! another expenses scandal!
> "Yes, the Great Train Robbery was a very serious crime,
Yeah, I remember, I was 13. It was big news even in Holland.

And this guy is the chairman of the ICGA ?
Levy pals with Ronnie Biggs ?
Nelson should write a script for Hollywood, the Godfather Part IV, bestseller.
