this was why i queried 8...Qb6 earlier,you will have to give up your Queen,its probably ok but did you realise this when you made the move.:smile:

I'd like to think of it as some sort of exchange for your two rooks :wink: (and piece for 3 pawns, which would be great for me if my e pawns weren't doubled).

No, but I always seek to play into some kind of material imbalances (if it wasn't this it'd probably have been my Knight + 2 Pawns Vs. your Rook), as otherwise we'd have played into some boring draw. At least, the resulting positions are interesting.

This move was really though, as I was really close to playing 26...b4. The thing is, that after b4 I have no idea of what you would play (I think 27.Ng5 would have been very playable there), and I just can't cover everything, while after my move, I think I'll have an easier time predicting your moves.

the trouble with Bird opening is that it puts no pressure on black,if black was content with a draw there is not much white can do about it.

These variations are too deep and scary, I kept looking most of yesterday and couldn't find one I'd like to play.

In this game I played the opening that I wanted, it's something I'm usually not able to do, as I have to follow theory or the engines to survive. But against the Bird I had more freedom, so I could get the Qd6 and a6 plan in there.

I still think 8...Qb6+ was best, I just didn't like the positions that appeared after 8...dxe4 or 8...Rd8, so in that position I'd play Qb6 again. Though against the Bird I don't think I'd play the same variation, probably I would avoid the dark Bishop fianchetto the next time around.
