Hello All,
I do not know what this is. Please comment.
I am analysing a game that I recently played OTB. At some point, I drifted into a difficult position and it got worse and worse and on move 72 I resigned.
When I came home, I set up Rybka to analyse the position of which I think I made a poor move. So, Rybka, using 41 kN/s went to depth 22 and started to think about a fourth possibility - since perhaps this was the saving move, I went to bed and let her do. When I got up, 8 hours later, Rybka is still considering the same move. So, we went to get groceries and did other things and by now more than 17 hours have been passed. Rybka is still considering this move. She has been considering the same move for 13 hours by now. This is not normal, is it not? What is happening?
Best regards,
Jack

Yes, this is normal. It is not happening often, but has been described by quite a few people - me myself has experienced something like that, too. Depending on the ply she is calculating be prepared to let her work on it for one or two days or perhaps even longer, and she will come out of her laboratory sound and safe...
You mean Rybka it is considering the same move at the same depth (22) after 13 hours?
Can you please post the position?

Hello Gambito,
Yes, this is what I mean. In 13 - 14 hours, no progress has been made: same ply, same depth, still considers the same move.
Sorry, I cannot post the position, I have no clue how I can do this.
Best,
Jack

Just copy paste the game from Chessbase interface or other GUI into this post.
Hello Jack,
Under Fritz or Chessbase GUI, simply go to Edit, then to Copy and Copy Position. After this, just paste the position here.

You can also right-click on the analysis window and choose "clip analysis" and paste it into this window.
Indeed, this is normal. We'll have a way to "sample" the ongoing search with Rybka 3, but currently you have no choice but to wait for the iteration to finish.

I don't get it. Vas could you please elaborate on what sampling you mean?
He basically just means that Rybka will update her analysis in the analysis window more often than simply every new ply or "change of mind". It will be more like Fritz--when it hits a fail high or fail low, it sometimes updates its evaluation more often than if it's analyzing a position "normally".
that's cool, but won't it slightly hog CPU resource?
Not anymore than usual, I would think.
This type of thing takes up 0.0001% of the CPU resources on a machine.

Hi,
what do we have to expect from Rybka if it is the best move ? off course she will still be considering that move. Why do you think that she has to change her mind after hours ? if she can't find a better pv, she will continue to display the same pv.
