Hi! My rating is only about 1050, and I'd like to increase that. Can someone suggest a GOOD website that talks about opening, middlegame, and end game, without it being too complex or too simple? Some sites only offer advice like "look at the whole board"... USELESS! I know a little bit about positional play, and I'd like to further my education on that...

Of course, the site must have quite a bit of info, else I'd been searching for a new site.

Thank you.

There are a million websites for what you are looking for!   If you are willing to pay for membership, chess.com is a good site and has it all.    At 1050, you need to work on your tactics and play LOTS of games and then analyze each game for your mistakes.   Tactics sites are ideachess, chesstempo, chess tactics server, chess.com tactics trainer, etc.   Looks like chessok has put out some of their educational courses on the website for a yearly or monthly membership.   Some of their courses are excellent.    Chessimo is also excellent (not a website, but software) and will no doubt improve your chess.   Join a chess club if you can, learn from the better players.

"look at the whole board" is not useless by the way!   You'll learn that fast next time some one's fianchettoed bishop comes crashing down on your castled king or your unprotected rook.    Good luck and enjoy the journey.

Thanks for the suggestion. As you said, there are millions of websites, and I'm looking for one that does not require payment of money. I play on Chess.com for free, and I've played a good 500 games already, with an additional 200 in bullet.

Recently my son got a couple of hundred dollars worth of itunes gift certificates so like any good dad, I am going to use some of the money for my own pleasure!   Any suggestions for tactics/chess puzzles download for IPAD?   I just wanna be able to do some puzzles while I am taking a walk, etc.   I spent about 2 minutes browsing through the app store, but I'd like to hear your opinions.  Thank you.

I just spent an hour looking at all the itunes store chess apps, the very last one listed is called "tactic trainer", 20 thousand problems, 2.99$ and there were about 5 or 6 other tactics/checkmates apps, enough stuff to keep me busy for a few life times.   I'll download the "e+chess" too, maybe I can read a chess book or two on it.

>is rare find people from USA who speak Spanish

I'm in Southern Arizona. I found this statement extremely absurd :-)
Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2011-11-16 21:06
i never explained well,my fault...i mean people from USA who was born in USA,not inmigrants or son's of inmigrants
Parent - - By Labyrinth (****) [us] Date 2011-11-17 01:56

Parent - - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2011-11-17 01:59
yes,still...maybe at some areas people speaks Spanish, but generally in USA people doesnt speak it
Parent - - By Banned for Life (Gold) Date 2011-11-18 10:01
People in the US are not very good with second languages (mainly because we're lazy and many people all over the world speak English), but Spanish is the most important second language here for two reasons. First, because we have a large number of first generation immigrants living in the US who speak Spanish and not English (more than ten million), and second because it's important when dealing with most of the countries in Central and South America, and in the Caribbean.

i cant understand how people goes to live to some countries, has kids, and dnt tech the language that is spoken in that country to their kids...is for that reason why is strange for me why is strange that there are people living from generations in USA that doesnt speak english

and about dealing people in central and south america, yes,i must agree is interesting speak Spanish

We live in this country (USA) and believe me that there are a lot of things that we don't understand ourselves, for example why our government keeps spending more and more money when we don't have the money!   I have personally given up trying to figure things out.

>i cant understand how people goes to live to some countries, has kids, and dnt tech the language that is spoken in that country to their kids..

Maybe because their parents barely know it themselves. No idea.

At my high school there was a large group of students that spoke almost no English, only Spanish.

The sad thing was that when I was in a Spanish language class we once visited the E.S.L. (English Second Language) class as an activity and we were going to sing songs in the other's language. We actually did a much better job with their Spanish songs than they did with our English ones :-(

lol probably

The students were trying to sing but didn't really know the words and even tried to pretend they did, you know how that sounds :-)
Parent - By Barnard (Bronze) Date 2011-11-19 02:35
if their parents went to an strange countey, they must leanrt this language...of course, they will never have a fluent english, but their kids will speak a perfect english, unless some stupid parents that preffer 'remember' to his kids where came their ancestors, and what language they used, and make that kids use that language instead of english, creating ghettos into the cities...that is sad, very sad...instead

I don't know if anybody here caught the Carlsen-Gelfand game from a couple of days ago.   Lot of the commentators seem to be praising it.

Yes, it's quite good. I like the way it fails you when you make an illegal move (ie move into check or whatever).
