Hi,
I think this comes from or is the same as our Harvest Festival but I have to admit once you leave Junior school aged 11 or are a church goer this hardly gets a mention or at least that is how I percieve it. I know in the UK it predates the christianity version by a long way and I remember collecting food in school and it being taken to the local church (holy trinity church Rotherhithe st) and being given to mainly the elderly. I assume this all goes on in some way

Regards

There is a story that goes along with our thanksgiving, but it isn't religious in any way. It's just an excuse to eat a lot, drink a lot, and bet on some football games.

... this year followed by Black Friday, so after eating & drinking there is the great follow up by 'buying boat loads of stuff one does not need'

That's capitalism for you! Everything gets eaten and shitted out as a money producing venture.

Is it!? Didn't know that!

I heard on the radio this morning that this particular black Friday is different because the shops (like Wallmart) opened at 9pm last night rather than 6am this morning to take early advantage of the crossing from in-the-red to in-the-black.

He he, of course they will use tricks like that to make us believe that this year's Black Friday was better than last year's

Because the stores were open at midnight -reports of shopping cart jacking in parking lots were routine- since rent-a-cops were stationed within the stores and not outside. Also, teams worked together within the stores to distract and loot shopping carts from unsuspected shoppers who had  highly prized items within their carts that could later be sold on eBay at a higher price.

Most opened at Midnight, and then there's CyBer_Monday

I didn't know either! But I found your statement interesting and had to do a research.

In the US:

Thanksgiving Day: The fourth Thursday of November.

Black Friday: The day following Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving is a lot deeper than that, but our society has sucked most of the meaning out  of it.  We can choose to rise above that in our own private celebrations if we wish.
