I have Deep Rybka Aquarium 4.07 with the Deep Rybka 4.1 engine.
How does one install the new program over the above two programs. I have not seen any instructions; or does one have to start from scratch and lose all the settings in Aquarium 4.07?
Also, I see that the download for Aquarium 2011 is not working. Can one email directly to Convekta to get it?
Thanks, CMA

1. Find the updater (I don't know where).
2. Tell the updater the location of Aquarium and <AquariumData> (it should find them automatically).

I have/had the same as you, Deep Rybka etc and I was informed that they do not advise trying to update over what you already have. Frankly its a start again job
You install the
new Aq then move all your engines/databases and everything else into that. I say one thing about Aquarium, nothing every seems to be simple and you need a computer degree.
Why they can't give people full advice on their web site beats me

Jammy:
Buffos contradicts what you have been told:
"Buffos:
"
1) Backup your AquariumData directory (just in case something wrong happens)."
I don't have an Aquarium Data Directory. I do have the installation folder c:\aqr which contains program files as well as many subfolders, including \Abases and \Atrees.
So what do I back up?
"2) Install The new version (you can use the same directory) and point as AquariumData directory, the SAME as you had with Aquarium 4".
In what folder do I install Aquarium 2011?
What is the new Data Directory?
Thanks for your help. Without it, all this would be guesswork.

>In what folder do I install Aquarium 2011?
as i told you above, use the same folder as for Aquarium 4. That is c:\aqr (as you said above)
Use the same directory for data directory (when promted) since you have both (program and data in the same directory)
Buffos seems to be saying to install Aquarium 2011 in the same top folder as Aqarium 4.07.
I do not know where he wants the data to be installed: in the top folder or in \top folder\Atrees or in \top folder\Abases.
If you find out the definitive answer to how to install Aquarium, please post here.
I will wait to install till I know where to install for sure.

As I said...clear as mud
This was in a email from chessok
"Well, for all purposes these are the same for you, since you already have Rybka. We recommend a clean installation in a new folder, then transferring databases/whatever other stuff you need, since overwriting (installing over existing thing) could rewrite/mess some settings. This is tricky, since Aq2011 has some new settings which can't reliably be merged with previous versions.
You can try installing in the same folder and program should work fine albeit some settings I've mentioned. I recommend backing up just in case if you want to overwrite."

Yes, this is a clear contradiction of what Buffos stated.
I wonder if anyone has installed Aquarium 2011 over Aquarium 4.07: were the settings preserved; or was the installation messed up?

Yes - I did not ask for advice, and it did not occur to me not to do so!
I installed Aq2011 over the existing Aq407 and, so far, at least everything has worked perfectly - the installion took only a very short time.
The only additional task was installing the UCI engines.
I had thing thing up and running within about 10 minutes of receiving the download, and as promised with a PayPal payment, the download availability was instantaneous.

One way to avoid reinstalling the UCI engines is to export the previous settings to an XML file (Engines|Export) and then importing to the new setup (Engines|Import).

It would be great if Convekta could give us a clue as to which settings have changed so that we could note them in Aquarium 4.07 before installing Aquarium 2011 over Aquarium 4.07.

Well, all I can add is that when I installed. I ended up with 2 Rybka on my desktop.( I did not like the idea of uninstalling my first). When I looked at my folders/files etc I had 1 each of Aquarium and Aquarium Data, and Aquaium 11 and Aquaium Data 11 of course the Aq 11 was the new ones. I then opened up the old Aquarium folders and moved what I wanted databases, engines etc over to the new Aq11 folders. The only thing I did not do (or rather I did not know how to) was move over my IDEA stuff, but frankly I did not have very much of that. When I finished, I then deleted the old Aquarium folders etc. This may not be the best way to do it, but it worked for me. I think
That was 2 shortcuts you can always delete one.
do as i told you and everything is fine.
Look this works,
1. Make backup of your Aquarium folder ; if you called it "whatever" make a backup
2. Make backup of your AquariumData folder ; if you installed it in the same folder as Aquarium then you won't need a backup
3. Run Aquarium and export the engine definetions. ie. mode: Engines>export>name the file
4. Install Aquarium-- you can install to new folder, old folder whatever. When it ask for a data directory give it one. either old or new folder or overlay an old one.
5. It will show you what you have defined and ask you if it can proceed.
6. Click the button to proceed or backup
7. once the install is finished you can click on Engines>import>filename and it will rebuild your engine definitions.
Now how hard is that? If you install into your old folders you will still have all your trees and most of the rest. You may have to redefine a small amount of things.

Keok:
Thank you for the detailed instructions. A couple of questions.
"1. Make backup of your Aquarium folder ; if you called it "whatever" make a backup."
Are you saying to make a backup of the entire Aquarium installation folder or just the subfolders \Atrees and \Abases ?
"4. Install Aquarium-- you can install to new folder, old folder whatever. When it ask for a data directory give it one. either old or new folder or overlay an old one."
I assume you mean Install Aquarium 2011. Back to the original question: do you recommend Buffos method to install in the original Aquarium folder ("\Aqr") or to install in a completely new folder, e.g, \Aqr2011 ?
"When it asks for a data directory, give it one. either old or new folder or overlay an old one."
Should this be the old folder "Aqr\Abases" or "Aqr\Atrees" or some new folder, e.g., \Aqr2011\Atrees or \Aqr2011\Abases ?
I think we are making progress on the installation instructions, just have to clarify a few points, since it is still unclear how and where to do the installation.
Thanks again.

Make a backup of the entire thing. This means both Aquarium folder and AquariumData folder if you have a separate data folder, otherwise your Aquarium folder is your data folder.
Secondly, choose whatever method sounds closer to your heart. If anything doesn't work out, you can always copy the original folder(s) back from the backup and try another method.

look. Dont get into any trouble. Just install over. The worst that will happen is you will have to "install" your engines again, which is 1 minute work.
So basically dont be afraid. Its really simple. Very simple.

Yeah, I just installed over and it works perfect, also the re-installing of the engines. Good advice, thanks ...

To make things simple can you post a screen capture of the directory/folder structure of whichever drive you have Aquarium.xxxx installed on. Where .xxxx is either 4 or 2010 or whatever you called it.
look. Both work. I really do not get you. There is no correct answer. Both are correct.
>I say one thing about Aquarium, nothing every seems to be simple and you need a computer degree.
common. you must be joking. as i said, both ways work. What is your problem? or you are trying to create one out of nothing at all.
I don't have a problem...I asked for advice from chessok and they gave me it. If you don't agree with it, fine, if your way works, fine. Like I said THAT is the advice I was given.
