Hi all
When using the Rybka opening book and engine. It uses an opening for black which is very poor and it uses it regulary.
Opening listed below
1. d4 e6 2. e4 Nf6 3. e5 Nd5 4. Nf3 Nc6 5. c4 Bb4+ 6. Ke2 Nb6 7. c5 Nd5 8. a3
Ba5 9. b4 N6xb4 10. axb4 Bxb4 0-1
How can I stop it from doing this opening. It is always a real struggle to come back for black and makes it difficult for black to win.
In short my question is how can I make it perform a different opening???
Thank you
Tony

Which book do you use (exact name) and in which interface? The RybkaII.ctg would never choose 2...Nf6.
I am not sure though, if the variation is that bad for black, looking at the position after 10...Bxb4:
(Also, you give the result 0-1 which would be a black win?!)
Nevertheless, a normal book shouldn't use that variation regularly (even the whole french shouldn't have a big share of 1.e4 games). Take a look at the book options in your interface. Maybe theses settings are not adjusted as recommended, for that book. Or if they are, you can try to adjust them in a way that frequency has more impact and/or results less, assuming that there are wins after 1...Nf6 in the book but I cannot imagine that the move is from many games, compared to the normal 2...d5.
Edit: After a closer look, it seems to me as if 6.Ke2 (UGLY!!) is another problem, although that seems to win a knight for 2 pawns, unlike the normal Bd2. This variation looks like a computer opening from a "no book" experiment. But I could be wrong and maybe it's from high level correspondence, who knows... :-)
(It is difficult to answer if I don't know or have that book and interface to compare, but the above are my best guesses.)

Ooooh, that IS a stinker.
Hi Brain
What would I do without you :-)
The opening book is Rybka_v2_0_0.abk
The interface is Arena 1.99beta4
Engine is Rybkav2.3.2a.mp.w32
The win for black you can ignore.
thanks for your help

From the FAQ for this book:
"Are there any special book usage or configuration instructions?
Yes.
1.Use the opening book until the 32 halfmoves.
2.Set Priority +15,Number of games +15,Win percentage 0"
Also, the Arena website offers other books, some of which are quite big. Maybe interesting alternatives, although they are not Rybka specific.

Hi Brain
Yes I have all those settings done as per instructions.
I wonder if there is another setting within arena that is working against this opening book.
There is such a multitude of settings within Arena its tricky to know what is the best to do.
I am currently dealing with the above poor opening by taking back the move and going d5. This sets it on a stronger course especially when time is short.
Its interesting that you think the position is not too bad. However in a short game of 5 mins it can so easily end in a draw.
I guess I have to wonder now if the Rybka book is the best to use with the Rybka engine.
By the way I am very grateful for your time on helping me. I hope I can help someone else in return.
