I bought a book called The Sniper by Charlie Storey recently and decided to try it out in this game. I think we are now more or less out of book so I would be interested in comments on this opening?

I deviated slightly from the mainline in the book. 5...Qa5 is given there. The book does note that 5...Nf6 as played by me is !? After 7.Bc4 the book suggests Qa5 8.Ne2 Nxc5. As you can see I opted for 7...Nxc5.

I have invited the author of the book to watch this thread, maybe he will join the forum and comment!?

I also wonder if in correspondence play 4...Bxc3 is ?! What about 4...Qa5!? 5.Bd2 Qxc5 6.Nd5 Na6 7.Nf3 e6 8.Bc3 Kf8! (Bxc3 is the main move here which seems bad to me at 1st glance.)

Well, I must confess this is the first time I've ever seen this opening, let alone played it, so I can't comment much out of experience. I chose 4.dxc5 because it leads to an unconventional kind of game (as opposed to for example sicilian transpositions) while I was at the same time getting quite comfortable evaluations. I must say I was happy you opted for 4...Bxc3, as I expect it gives white the most interesting possibilities with the bishop pair and a vulnerable black kingside, I like a dynamic game, especially in a correspondence setting like this. I had Qa5 as the better fifth move for black with some margin, but I didn't have the position evaluated deep enough yet around that time. I also had 7...Qa5 as quite good for white after 8.Ne2 Nxc5 9.Qd5 e6 10.Qf3, where the black position looks quite shaky on the dark squares.

It would certainly be interesting to have the author of your book comment on this game! Here I have 9. O-O as my only move, so that brings us to:

An interesting system Harvey, I use to play a lot of the Pirc/Modern in my High School days.

I was very afraid of 16. a4! eg ... Rb8 17. c4 Ncd8 18. h3! I have spent the last few days looking at this and I think White is winning. I will post my replly to c4 later. The Bishop on h6 is a real pain

So far I am not that impressed with this book i bought :)

You know your in trouble if your best line has a knight retreat like Ncd8.

I think you are right about the 16.a4 line. I had that as my mainline for a long time, until even higher evals started popping up for c4. I think now that I shouldn't have switched with as relatively little evaluation time as I had then, but I guess we'll see what happens :)

I think White has a nice advantage here. I would like to have played 17...0-0-0 but it looks worse.
