Now, the main problem is deciding what rules will we use, though I'd like to use rules based on the Yalta game, they work as long as one doesn't take the game too seriously and plays for fun
One very important part to decide is on what board are we going to play.
The most straight forward implementation is a Vendetta Board
Benefits: The simplest way, there is no explanation required about the board pieces since the topology is just like normal chess.
Problems: The most bloated board as 64 extra squares are added. Promotions are basically out of the game. Players have to play from the top. Players in front of each other have problems reaching each other. Players on the left and right have a dark corner at their right, instead of a light one.
Another one is keeping extruding the board to add more players, this is 4 players Yalta:
Benefits: It has already been tried and it works.
Problems: Weird board topology makes diagonal moves and Knight moves confusing at the edges. Players have to play from the top (and, well, weird looks weird.) Players in front of each other have problems reaching each other.
And of course there's Ralph Betza's Multiplayer Chess Variant:
(Note: there are only 4 half-boards, they are mirrored here for convenience)
Benefits: Pieces get more movement (all players can reach others easily.) All players can play from a bottom-view. It can be trivially expanded to infinite number of players (unless one runs out of colors...)
Problems: Most complex rule set that would need to be discussed. Basically, players have their half of the board, and they paste it to another player's half before making a move. In this example white plays 1.e4, the other players perceive it as e5, the Bishop can move to any of the white circles (this is Robert Price's idea so that King faces King, with the price that Bishops may change colors, without mirroring the pasted boards Bishops keep colors but King faces Queen).
I've read that most rule sets have players working as teams, I assume we won't, and that all players are independent like in the Yalta game.
So what do you think about the board we should use? I really have no preference, all these seem like new terrain and interesting.

Sure, I usually try to find the fastest solution to a problem, and in this case it was Moulding the board. Here's one with squares of the same width, though remember that because of the topology, you can only switch between different kinds of weird:
If that's acceptable then we can start discussing who gets what colors, with a White-Red-Green-Blue order I'd go with Christian (for being the newcomer) - Me - TheHug - Tomski (this last order as a kind of white-black color change from normal chess, as tomski won the last game, and Jimmy started it).

i ask uly to provide an empty board and add the pieces in photoshop (keeping each color in a different layer). I cut and move every piece to reflect the movements made here by the players...

I found the concept very easy to grasp, perhaps it's about the presentation. I know that we're going to play Yalta but here's another try at explanation.
(imagine the sides being rotated to make contact with the bottom half-board, or the top halfboard being pasted down) So, it's basically Yalta, but the pieces can make these moves into the two extra half-boards as well.

I'll post a board with the current position each move, the way I analyze is visualizing on that posted board future moves, though I visualized like 4 plies on the other game.
Finally, I think the players left and right (red and blue) should have their king and queen swapped around, it's as close as King facing King as one can get.

I like this idea. But the way I don't mind the board position either. As I'm the 3rd person which would give me the top view and maybe for some the hardest to visualize maybe? I don't mind this As I think I have the best visual I hope
Can you add square notation?
