Cleaning my hard drive and found a copy of Larry's program RexChess from 1990.  Wonder if he's been secretly working on it all these years? :)  I was going to play it against Rybka but couldn't get it to work in XP...

I have Socrates 3.0 (1993) :-) IIRC, Don Dailey and Larry Kaufman created it.

I have a 3.5" disk drive in my Vista computer, but couldn't get it to run although I tried some memory options in the properties. I don't have a DOS emulator. But some years ago, I still could run it on another comp with the DOS of Win98.

This is from a shuffle chess experiment, Chess960 compatible positions. Lyon with 40/2h and Socrates with 60/20m or ~20 sec/move (I forgot it's level settings), on a PII/333 MHz. The idea was to emulate a 486 with 40/2h, but Socrates' permanent brain couldn't be deactivated. - I also have Kasparov's Gambit from that era from the same authors (published by EOA):

PB Try Dosbox, this is very useful for running old dos progs in current windows boxes.

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net

Also got a link for Rexchess :-)

I have Kasparov's Gambit; it was one of my favorite programs during my late middle school days.  Unfortunately, I have never been able to get it to work on my machine in DOS mode--it always says something about not having the available RAM or something, even when there is obviously easily enough RAM in the system.

This program was one of my favorite chess programs in the early of 90's.

Of course, Kasparov's Gambit was from the same authors, but it was using also the Socrates engine.

If you want a good DOS emulator then you could try with DOSBox; this emulator needs one interface to work and it is Dfend. You can download both programs in the same page. This emulator is easy to run and works very good but note that if you want to run old DOS programs at maximum speed, then this program is not useful. For this, you need Virtual PC Machine program and then install there an old Windows and from there you can run these DOS applications. Virtual PC machine is wonderful because it runs old programs at full processor speed and maximum strength.

Gambito.

Actually, Don Dailey said he might try to update one of our old programs with some of the discoveries in computer chess over the last two decades just to see how it would compare to today's programs. He also is starting a new program, called "Odie", with some collaboration from me. He is interested in trying out grand new ideas and doing experiments, rather than making something to market, so it's unlikely to be a rival for Rybka unless he happens on some great discovery. Most likely, his work will benefit Rybka.
