Now! Is that right!

Without sneaking around-why don't the both of you kid's come right out and share with everyone what program that would be?

Or, is the price for doing so too high to pay?!

Nothing is free!

One can be the strongest in the middlegame, another in the endgame, third in closed positions, etc. So, what is the definition of the strongest chess program anyway? The one that has the best overall score against other engines? But if such a program is, for example, weak in middlegames or endgames, is it really the strongest?
Parent - By sarciness (***) [gb] Date 2010-12-26 10:38
Yes.

A book, Chess Blueprints, Planning in the Middlegame, by Nikolay Yakovlev.
Parent - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2010-12-25 13:39
Looks interesting, didn't hear about the book or it's author, but just read an excerpt that didn't look too bad :)
Parent - - By Maxou93 (**) [fr] Date 2010-12-25 21:19

I got a calendar for Christmas- from my landlord! :yell:

(Actually, it's kind of cute, Called DOGMA- A Dog's Guide to Life. It's probably more for Liza then for me-seeing that there are pics of dogs for each month.)

Nice!  That made me laugh.

I got a beard groomer from my parents....I guess that was a hint for me from them.

I have not seen "A Dog's Guide to Life", but I am familiar with A Dog's Philosophy of Life. Sniff it and if you can't eat it or screw it, then piss on it!

1- Renewed my subscriptions to Chesspublishing.com, Chess today, New in Chess Yearbook and Opening Master. I had taken a long break and needed to catch up on published opening theory.

2- Bought Chessbase 11 mostly to be able to use the new Megabase 2011.

3- Hiarcs 13 mp (I only had the sp until now) and Hiarcs opening book.

4- Santa also brought me hardware: an i7-980x.

I don't physically have many of these items yet but feel blessed anyway.
Parent - - By Indrajit (***) [in] Date 2010-12-27 17:43
Please send me the address of this Santa... I need one of those

My wife cooked a great dinner for me on christmas eve

Hi Felix,

First and foremost I wish you a very exciting 2011 !

And now this sad remark: so many don' t get anything for Xmas and have to buy their own presents !

I did when downloading R4 !

Cheers,

Alain

at least you know what you wish yourself most when you make yourself a present ;)
Parent - By Quicksort (**) [fr] Date 2010-12-28 04:21 Edited 2010-12-28 04:28
That's true my friend. Life goes on, however challenging it is, and chess is the best way to forget about the worst !

I got a free update of the best chess GUI aquarium. I also got engines like komodo and the world strongest engine
Parent - - By mdraith (**) [de] Date 2010-12-30 22:52 Edited 2010-12-31 16:36
Sorry to destroy your daydreams but Arena is the best chess GUI. I bought the new HIARCS 13.2 because it's the best engine for what I want to do with it. I also downloaded a strong free engine out of curiositiy. After ~20 moves it squashed me like some annoying little fly. That's no fun, dammit.
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2010-12-30 23:48
You don't know what you are talking about :)

Chess engines are used for analysis mainly and Aquarium is the best interface for that :)
Parent - - By mdraith (**) [de] Date 2010-12-31 00:00
Maybe Aquarium is for the hard core engine enthusiast, but I want a nice interface where I can battle against my beloved engine and Arena is the way to go for me.
Parent - - By Felix Kling (Gold) [de] Date 2010-12-31 00:02
It's no hardcore engine GUI, that is rather a good description for Arena :) I'm talking about analysis.

Have you actually ever tried Aquarium?
Parent - - By mdraith (**) [de] Date 2010-12-31 00:10
I had a look at the screenshots and there was too much information overload. Mainly I want to play against my engine and use it as a kiebitz in the playchess frontend when watching grandmaster games. I used Fritz 8 for several years and Arena 3.0 is way better.
Parent - By Indrajit (***) [in] Date 2010-12-31 06:33
The only drawback I find is not being able to read CTG books. I use Fritz and just love the simplicity of the interface.
Parent - By Arrière Pensée (Gold) Date 2010-12-31 06:46
Arena is a great GUI for some with no money!
Parent - - By ppipper (*****) [es] Date 2010-12-30 22:31
I got a very special present from my Queen in my everyday's game...

Happy and prosperous 2011!!

Edit: someday's game ;-)

Will you also change your footer next year?.

It's still painful to read.
Parent - - By ppipper (*****) [es] Date 2010-12-31 09:59
I will see... Another alternative is not to change it until next championship...
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-12-31 20:16
Happy new year! (already in Spain?) y feliz noche vieja

Your signature is SO 2010

Happy 2011 everyone
Parent - - By TheHug (Bronze) [us] Date 2010-12-31 21:35
If you can win WBCCC I, you could chance it to World Blitz Corr Chess Champion 2011 . I would say that would be worth a change.
Parent - By ppipper (*****) [es] Date 2011-01-09 00:25
You can be sure I will do it in such a case. I am not very optimistic, though, since the level is going to be very high and I still don't have a lot of experience.

In any case I won't be an easy opponent...
- By Ron Bateman (**) [us] Date 2010-12-26 07:06
I got myself a Zagreb '59 Seris Chess Set-3.875 inch King.  Made of Boxwood and Genuine Ebony!

- - By Geomusic (*****) Date 2010-12-28 04:16
