1- add 1 or 2 moves to the book for the variation played in game 3
2- teach rybka to use more time for the first (and maybe
for the second) moves after just leaving the book. because they will
affect the whole game more than other moves
3- add (or raise if it exists) a parameter about locked bishops
4- make the contempt factor dynamic
5- use more 6men TBs on SSDs (for GUI or Rybka ?)
6- don't use untested versions in serious matches
7- a seperate unit for endgame. can't rybka use a different position evaluation function for
each possible endgame (for example, king+pawn endgames,
king+bishop vs king+2pawns, etc). maybe it will take too much effort and time to
program this, but isn't this the best approach?

8- Don't draw too many conclusions from 2 losses (no engine can avoid to lose, now and then).
9- Don't give quickshot advice to top experts who have created the strongest engine ever!

Btw. the match is 10 games, not 4 games :-D

1) that 2 losses has a big effect on the rest of the game..Btw each game is important..isn't??
2) Why not give advice?....its only an advice its up to them if they will listen or not....btw expert are only humans they are prone to errors also...do you believe in the saying..."two heads is better than one?"....do you?
3) yes we do believe on the professionalism of the rybka team..but is it obvious that the evaluation result of the new rybka has problems as compared to the 2.3.2a. and why they choose such version?
4) If symptom persist (loosing of rybka), seek advice.. :)

Quote, "2) Why not give advice?...."

I didn't write that. Did you read the complete sentence or only 3 words of it? I wrote: "Don't give quickshot(*) advice to top experts", and that we have seen 4 games only from 10, yet.

*) I mean a snapshot

Please let's at least wait until that short (!) match is over AND until we have read the programmer's and team member's comments after the match, before drawing conclusions whatsoever.

You wrote it...I read it one by one, and word for word. I read also your "quickshot" advice..its only an adjective to the word "advice". It expresses your verb "advice" to a more meaningful or it add up spice to the verb "advice". and it is still an advice (either it is quickshot, funny, harsh, worse, etc...).

yahh 4 games is nothing, has no bearing at all, its only 4 games 2.5-1.5? its nothing!." is that what your trying to say?? Have you read my sentence carefully? "Each game is very important". I know its not the end of the game. but if Rybka team does not wake up and keep on guessing on what version to use,  I am sorry to say that Rybka will not win. And sorry to Rybka 2.3.2a, her talent will not be recognized by crushing the best Zappa.

Btw its only an advice.

I am sorry

Our hope in this forum is if we can help a little to make the best engine better.
Maybe we will tell Vas 10 things, and maybe he will like one of them, maybe he will modify that idea, and implement in Rybka.
Because of this possibility, everyday I spend my time to read this forum, understand things, and try to invent something.
If Vas and his team think that we are useless, he can close this forum.
Most of us aren't experts.
If you are right, I offer to close this forum.

As for (1), that's not a good idea--white seems to come out noticeably ahead in all of these lines, as the team has already noted.  As they know, it's best to switch lines.  As for (2), I'm sure that's something they can change easily.  I notice that Zappa takes a long time on first moves out of book in a test match that I'm currently running.

EDIT:  Also, switching to Alan's 1.b3 is also a bad idea :-)  Zappa with black plays the resulting positions extremely well.

Actually, that's not quite right. What you really mean is that some of the 1. b3 lines that lead to early positions where white has a win % greater than 80% don't work nearly as well against Zappa. There are two possibilities here:

1) These early "winning positions" are actually only "winning positions" against Rybka, or
2) The best follow ups against Zappa aren't in the book because too few games have been played against this engine.

So far, every case I've looked at has been in the 2) category rather than the 1) category, but I don't have enough data yet to draw a firm conclusion. By the way, if you are in the CB engine room and want to see some of these early "won positions", I'll be happy to show some of them to you in Centaur mode. I am very interested to see if Zappa can win from these positions consistently against Rybka, the way Rybka can.

Regards,
Alan
