These ratings mean very very little. I have an account "PortCitySlim" that is rated over 2900 but I haven't used it to play a game in a long time. I would only need to play a few games and my name would be on top the rating list for a week or so but with my current hardware there is no way I could hold that rating playing over 50 games a day.

Well I am using an i7 980x at 4 Ghz so it should be to difficult if to enter top 10 you just have to go higher than 2720.

regards

Hey HighEnd What is your current hardware? And what will you be upgrading to soon?
Parent - By serbian master (**) [rs] Date 2010-04-12 09:20
First place only 2700 points

lots of those ratings are quite fake since they were achieved several years ago and players have not played any more
Parent - - By Bouddha (****) [ch] Date 2010-03-31 16:53
right.

ratings higher than 2850 would nearly be impossible now days unless someone is using Rybka 4 on a cluster with a good book....
Parent - By Fulcrum2000 (****) [nl] Date 2010-03-31 17:05
Zunkor and Demchuk still play, but they mostly play each other in order not to dilute their ratings...

Rybka 4  hmm but is it legal to use it before data premier?

Can we buy R4 yet?

Hey, are you the same sysop guy on that is always on engine room? I contacted info@chessbase.com about this but get no response, I'd appreciate if you answer this question then.

Thank you,

Some say he's wanted by the CIA, and that he sleeps upside down like a bat... all we know is, he's called Harvey.

Funnily enough 2 of my best friends are members of the Rybka team. Hans and Jeroen are welcome in my bat cave anytime :)

This is not correct.

Playchess states that in order to to remain in a top 100 list, you must play at least 1 game every 3 days.  Unless they don't honor the rule, he must play.  Usually some poster here or on talkchess offere monthly playchess games.  Look here:

http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforum/topic_show.pl?tid=15417

I am nontheless skeptical of  a > 2900 playchess rating with an I7-920 at stock speed with 6 gig of ram.  I have the exact hardware, Rybka 3 and a good book.  My highest rating was 2715.  If I overcloked to 4.0 GHZ and had a better book, I still don't see getting above 2800.

I wonder if rating manipulation is possible.  Can I challange my friends and get them to "dump" games to me, either in centaur mode, by making 1 or 2 bad moves, or by playing with a bad book, or no book?

If you find a winning line that you can exploit for a good run in one day you can go from 2700 to 2900. Once you get to 2900 you only have to play one game every three days to stay listed on the ratings. Its not that hard. I let my old account expire but it was rated over 2900, with it today I could cherry pick a game against a weak player and improve my rating while at the same time getting my name posted on the top of the ratings list. There is no sense in paying attention to the ratings on playchess, the only thing that maters is the collection of data/games for the use of improving opening books.

the only thing that matters is the collection of games for the use of improving opening books

but from that point of view only very long games have a minimum of interest. Time control under 30 minutes delivers many moves with depth=13 or 14 even if you play at 4.20 ghz which are useless for books.

And the sicilian endogamy does not help either.

Depends on the book you are making. People who make books to compete in tourny's like Sedat's will use Playchess blitz games(Some of them) to make their books.
