FICGS has challenged us to a match of games, but unlike our previous games where all the players thought together and voted for a move this time there will be unitary games, where 1 player of our team plays a player of the opposing team, and we will see what team scores better at the end.

I'm proposing 24-48 hours average time per move without time forfeit, half the games will be played on Rybka Forum and the others will be played at FICGS, the games at FICGS will have a different time control.

List of players, sides, and pairings:

Games at Rybka Forum:

24hrs/move makes an interesting game. each move gets you another 24hrs and start with 30 days. chess rapid tournaments, 30 days + 1 day / move is already setup on ficgs as a standard rapid tournament.

I don't. Would it be convenient to register in? Is it free?
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-04-07 08:44
It's free, at the end we should at least have half the team registered at FICGS, AFAIK we have 2, so if the next 2 already have an account you'd not need to register. Otherwise it's possible.

Hi all, I didn't see this discussion before... glad to see that the match will likely happen :)

You can see that we started to build our team in this discussion at FICGS :

http://www.ficgs.com/Match-Against-Rybka-Forum-q8422.html

I see no reason to limit the number of players/games so let's try to gather a large number of players, what do you think Vytron?

Let's have fun!

Alright, I have a bit of ADHD and wanted to get the team ready and start ASAP :), but I guess we're not in a hurry, so I'll let the number of players opened.

I think we can start whenever you want.
Parent - - By FICGS (**) [fr] Date 2010-04-12 13:54
Ok, just give me a few more days and we can make pairings... :)
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-04-12 14:27 Edited 2010-04-12 15:41
Alright, here's our list of players:

CumnorChessClub (has FICGS account)
Ivang64 (willing to get FICGS account)
keoki010 (has FICGS account)
omprakash
ppipper (willing to get FICGS account)
SpiderG
Vytron
Weirwindle111

So there it is, CumnorChessClub, Ivang64, keoki010 and ppipper will play on FICGS, the others will play on Rybka forum.

Here's your current known team:

FICGS (Has Rybka Forum account)
Lowrance W (Has Rybka Forum account)
Williamson H (Has Rybka Forum account)

So you only need 5 players more, and one of them needs a forum account, I'm assuming you're playing :).

I suggest making arbitrary pairings like this, taking the nick or surname of the players and matching them:

Axxx Vs. Bxxx
Cxxx Vs. Dxxx

Also, I suggest double elimination tourney, that is, players that lose two games are out, and we keep playing until all players of a team are kicked out, that way if there's a weak player on a team it won't give many wins to the other team. What do you think?
Parent - By SpiderG (***) [us] Date 2010-04-12 15:30
Sounds good...
Parent - - By FICGS (**) [fr] Date 2010-04-13 10:47 Edited 2010-04-13 10:51
Hi Vytron & all...

Our team should be the following :

Michel v.d.K.
Thibault d.V. (will play at Rybkaforum)
Mircea H.
Garvin G. (to be confirmed)
Robert M.  (will play at FICGS)
William T. (will play at Rybkaforum)
Harvey Williamson
Wayne L. (will play at Rybkaforum)

I need one more day (I hope) to know who will play here or not... Also we need to know the usernames of each player at the opposite website (at least at FICGS so that I can create the games)...

About double elimination, I'm not sure, IMO the idea in such matches is 1 game per player only (it takes some time already)... but if we find more players, we may start other games, why not.

Also I guess that players who play at home should take White in their games, what do you think?
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-04-13 13:51

>IMO the idea in such matches is 1 game per player only (it takes some time already)...

I'd predict we'd be over in just 2 months with our that format (yeah, double elimination would make it run a lot longer), but I'd still like to see players that win their games play against players of the opposing team that also win their games.

> if we find more players, we may start other games, why not.

But we already have enough players, with 8 players per side we have a possible 8 games per player with both colors, for a crazy 16 months round robin... just kidding! :)

What about single elimination? You lose a game, or you draw twice, and you're out.

> Also I guess that players who play at home should take White in their games, what do you think?

Or black, so home advantage offsets black disadvantage :)
Parent - - By FICGS (**) [fr] Date 2010-04-13 15:53
In my experience, it should take more than 5 months and up to 8 months to finish these games if played at a rapid time control (like 30 days + 1 day/move)

About the tournament format, best could be (IMHO) to let it go for a unique game per player and to envisage why not a revenge after that ? :)  This way, if a player cannot play for some reasons, we can build different teams... The reason is that (still in my experience) it is hard to predict if all players in a team will be available for months (several rounds)... and I like simple rules :)

There is also a suggestion in the FICGS forum to order teams by ratings to have pairings of about same strength... it would be quite easy for us but do you think it would be possible for your team (whatever the ratings, FIDE, ICCF, FICGS...) ?  I'm not sure if this is important or not... just tell me what you think.

Our current team :

William T. (will play at Rybkaforum)
Harvey Williamson (will play at Rybkaforum)
Wayne L. (will play at Rybkaforum)
Thibault d.V. (will play at Rybkaforum)
Michel v.d.K. (will play at FICGS)
Mircea H. (will play at FICGS)
Robert M.  (will play at FICGS)
??? (we need one more player)
Parent - - By Harvey Williamson (*****) Date 2010-04-13 16:18
We need to clarify what the time control will be. If you want to make pairing according to elo my ICCF rating is currently 2425. Wouldn't it be easier to just play all games at FICGS it will keep track of the time used automatically? Mirror games can be set up on the rybka forum with the latest moves.
Parent - By FICGS (**) [fr] Date 2010-04-13 17:06
It could be easier but the aim of the match is for fun and to create some friendly links between the two places before all (I think)... So if the time control may be fatal at FICGS, the rules would be slightly different (more relax) here, I guess... Why not...
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-04-13 17:13

> In my experience, it should take more than 5 months and up to 8 months to finish these games if played at a rapid time control (like 30 days + 1 day/move)

I thought we agreed to 24-48/hours average time per move without time forfeit, people at FICGS can set infinite time control and adjust to this setting. E.g. you're expected to take max 20 days for the next 10 moves, but I expect the players to stick closer to a day per move than to 2 days per move.

In my experience such time controls lead to games ending in just about two months on average, though on Rybka forum usually the opening is played on a blaze so after 2 days we're already at move 6 etc., but theoretically two slow players could keep playing till 5 months indeed.

I say let's play the first round and at the end of it make further decisions (remaining open to play future games if it indeed took two months or something.)

@Harvey: About half the members have an account at the other place, so I don't see a need to have everyone register at FICGS to play, Rybka Forum permits to play just nicely.
Parent - - By keoki010 (Bronze) [us] Date 2010-04-13 17:40
Vytron, if you need it, my username at FICGS is clement_george I'm currently 2129 elo.
Parent - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-04-13 17:48
Thanks, only the FICGS names of CumnorChessClub, Ivang64 and ppipper are missing, I think they'll be here soon enough.
Parent - - By FICGS (**) [fr] Date 2010-04-13 18:17
24-48 hours average time per move for a game of 50 moves (=100 half moves) means a max of from 100 days to 200 days already!  Anyway, we can set a 20 days + 20 days / 10 moves or longer if you wish... I think everyone will agree to this. I just have to know a defined time control for the games.
Parent - - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2010-04-13 18:44
Yeah, you can arrange any time you wish, the important part is the lack of time forfeit, so overstepping the limit doesn't lose you the game, you can just get back to the average in the next moves.

2 days + 20 days / 10 moves sounds about right.
Parent - - By FICGS (**) [fr] Date 2010-04-15 13:00
My suggestion 20 days + 20 days / 10 moves means actually 20 days for the first 10 moves so it sounds good...

Our team now has 8 players !  Garvin G. is the 8th passenger :)  Our team ordered by rating :

Wayne L. 2479 (will play at Rybkaforum)
Harvey Williamson [2425 ICCF] (will play at Rybkaforum)
Thibault d.V. 2376 (will play at Rybkaforum)
William T. 2110 (will play at Rybkaforum)

Robert M. 2383 (will play at FICGS)
Michel v.d.K. 2226 (will play at FICGS)
Garvin Gray 2133 (will play at FICGS)
Mircea H. 1988 (will play at FICGS)

If you order your players in 2 groups (playing at FICGS or RybkaForum) by ratings, the pairings will be done !

I think we can start now... can you also send me a private message to tell me the usernames (or names) of your players at FICGS ?

Also finally do the players "at home" take White or Black ?  White is best IMO, this way your players can create the discussion for their game (works this way, right?), and we just have to reply with our moves in PGN format like 1.e4 c5 ... I guess.

Thanks Vytron, have fun :)

> My suggestion 20 days + 20 days / 10 moves means actually 20 days for the first 10 moves so it sounds good...

Oh, I thought it meant 20 days of starting time, plus 20 added days for 10 moves, which would be 18 days slower per player than my proposed time. In any case, I'd rather see 2 days + 2 days / 1 move, but I'm not going to fight over the match details ;)

Will PM the details as soon as I get them all, I'm going to ask for confirmation of the team members since I'm afraid some aren't currently available and could be replaced by the just signed up members.

Also, I don't think Rybka Forum members have such ratings, that's why I was proposing pairing based on names.

Have you found this extra player? Because Weirwindle111 seems to have disappeared from the forum in the last 4 days (and hasn't continued his correspondence game at RF), I wonder if we should just start with 7 players per side.

We got 10 members, can you get another 2 or what do we do?

If you can't get more players, I can play representing the FICGS side if necessary, that'd make it a 9v9 ;)
