Vasik why don't you challenge the hydra team for a match with rybka. It would be interesting match.

hydra is no more unless there is some news I am missing. After the Adams match in 05 nothing more was heard

Hydra was designed to be the world's strongest chess entity.  The person financing the project was a wealthy person in Abu Dhabi.  I would think that after Rybka came out it has become obvious that all that amazing hardware is limited by the strength of a Nimzo engine.  No offense to Chrilly but a Nimzo on steroids cannot match a Rybka on fast hardware.  Hydra in its heyday was a formidable chess entity that beat Shredder (the then invincible chess engine).  Today we know that even a 4 core Rybka can beat the Shredder that played against Hydra more convincingly.  Obviously Hydra would have improved even more had they continued development ... but really you are only as strong as your weakest link ... and that link is an older generation Nimzo engine.  Not  having the strongest chess entity anymore must have made the entire Hydra project seem a meaningless project.  Now modify Rybka to run on Hydra and then things might get interesting again.

Actually, I was just thinking yesterday that this challenge should be made.  As far as I know, Hydra is being improved and rebuilt to be a stronger engine running on 128 cores; I don't know the progress of this.

I dont know where you take the information that Hydra is a Nimzo program.
The chess part for Hydra was a from scratch new developed chess engine. This was also a must, because FPGA differ very much from CPUs, so the normal chess software approach does not work.
That is also a reason that Rybka can not be direct converted to FPGAs and run on the Hydra hardware.

Hi,

Of course it is not the exact same program, Nimzo, but it was written by the same programmer.

Okey I see, Mephisto MM IV and Rebel 12 is more or less the same.

I am wondering if there would be possible to rewrite rybka to HDL. If I presume that most important aspect is evaluation there would be great boost whit such hardware. Is there any open core chess engine?

Enough steroids can be enough to beat 4 core rybka.

1)nimzo can take some software streoid and use toga engine.
2)I believe that toga can beat rybka if toga is using enough streoeids.
From the ccrl list:

1 Rybka 2.3.2a 64-bit 4CPU 3117 +29 −28 75.2% −172.3 35.1% 444
9 Toga II 1.3 Beta 1 2910 +26 −26 54.5% −33.2 39.6% 502
94.4%

Assuming 50 elo per doubling maybe efficient 32 processor toga can beat 4 core rybka at tournament time control.

Hydra is NOT being developed. I thought this was established 3 months ago when Vas said the team had gone their seperate ways and headed back into industry.

Has something changed since then? Just look at the hydra website, their news section hasn't been updated in 6 months

Originaly implemented software program to chess supercomputer was developed
from "Brutus".
That wasn't  especially clever program.Fritz and Shredder used to comfortably beat it on
equal processing strenght ply.
Having said that,I would think that Deep Rybka calculating only 20-30 million positions per second would
beat 200 million  positions Hydra.

My 2 cents

For that matter, you can be pretty darned confident that Rybka on a fast quad would comfortably beat Hydra (in fact, my bet is that Rybka 2.3.2a 32-bit on a fast Athlon would be at least even with Hydra Scylla); let's not even talk about something running at 20-30 Mnps :-)

Hydra is dead.Vas and crew must concentrate on Junior.Junior will be a formidible opponent.
