I would be interested to see how the super Chess playing monster would do in these 24 hard testpositions.
I'm talking about the famous Rybka cluster of course.
Lukas if and whether you will find some time and have the cluster free, can you please make a run in some positions?

I think that Rybka cluster will have a score of about 8/24 and it will not solve 16 of the positions in 20 minutes time.
I've put a for the positions i think it would not solve in under 20 minutes time and it will take longer and i've put a ۩ for the positions i think it would solve in 20 minutes time or less.
Perhaps i'm underestimating the power the big monster has.

Maybe because 1.Nd3 does not win. :-P
I made a mistake. The correct move is 1.Kd3 and not 1.Nd3?

Very nice positions...
Parent - - By Uri Blass (*****) [il] Date 2009-10-26 14:47
Nd3 still does not win.

Nd3 means that you touch the knight and need to play with it so you cannot play Kd3.
Parent - By Uly (Gold) [mx] Date 2009-10-26 17:11
Most interfaces don't enforce the touch rule.
Parent - - By ebutaljib (****) Date 2009-10-26 17:58
What does touch move have to do with anything? Or that Nd3 is not winning?

No engine will ever consider Nd3 simply because it is illegal, and chess engines don't search and calculate illegal moves.
Parent - - By Uri Blass (*****) [il] Date 2009-10-26 19:11 Edited 2009-10-26 19:14
The point is that I understood that kd3 is the only winning move and if you need to play with the knight you do not win.

Edit:I guess that buggy chess engines may analyze illegal moves so your claim that engines do not analyze illegal moves is wrong
I also know that even engines with no bugs analyze illegal moves of capturing the king in their search but there is no reason for engines to analyze illegal move that are even not pseudo-legal.

if i didnt count wrong, the cluster solved 14/24 positions, w/ most moves found in a few seconds.  the notable exception is position #13 where it still found it in under 20min (i.e. george's time limit).  this 14/24 score is much higher than what george predicted which i'm sure he's delighted to see.

if u take out "voided" positions not found due to technical errors (positions 4, 8, 11, 16), the cluster's score improves to 14/20 (70%).

for the remaining 7 positions the cluster couldnt crack, 5 were fortresses.  such positions are what larry kaufman believes is the final frontier for engines, so it's not surprising the bulk were composed of such positions.

btw: what's the winning line for position #24?  can the cluster confirm it's a forced win?

> btw: what's the winning line for position #24?

Based on overnight analysis with Rybka 3 1-cpu in the Aquarium 4 beta IDeA, it involves several round trips of the king between a5 and f1/f2 (triangulation), forcing a pawn move each time. I stopped after seeing "only" 80 moves of the variation, so it doesn't confirm the win, but it looks convincing.

Yes i'm very much impressed.

I don't understand what is the technical error about not solving the above 2 positions:

"I don't understand what is the technical error about not solving the above 2 positions:"

position 4: i'm just going by uri's post where he says, "Something is clearly wrong with the cluster because even movei that is many hundrends of elo weaker than rybka can see the mate easily."
can someone w/ r3 on an quad/octal confirm that r3 (on a non-cluster) can see the mate?

position 11: i'm just going by lukas' claim (which i presume was made before he let the cluster run the position) that "to solve this, you need an engine that allows switching off null-move pruning. This is not implemented in Rybka cluster."
Parent - By Uri Blass (*****) [il] Date 2009-10-26 10:53
I will only say that I do not call it technical error.

Something is wrong with the cluster means that I think that it should not be hard to fix it(movei is not using null move pruning when the number of moves is very small so my opinion is that it is better to disable null move pruning in case that the number of legal moves is small and the remaining depth is big enough(so counting the number of legal moves is not expensive).

My opinion is that positions when the number of legal moves is small and the side to move is not in check do not happen often but when they happen zugzwang are common so it is probably to disable null move pruning.

There are two questions:

1. When we will see the first engine with increasing eval by depth in this position (last journey (only 22 moves!) of white's king)?

8/Bk6/1P6/KP2np2/1P1p1p2/1Pp2p1p/2P4p/1B5B w - - 0 1

2. When we will see the first engine that pushing blacks pawns is worse than moving with black king on a8 and b7 (if the engine has the choice)?

> 1. When we will see the first engine with increasing eval by depth in this position (last journey (only 22 moves!) of white's king)?

Here is the result of my test with Rybka 3 1-cpu (256MB hash):

0 minutes:  0.00
5 minutes: +1.91
7 minutes: +3.25

Of course you won't see that in your Fritz with this engine, but that's what I saw in my GUI ;) Currently it's showing +4.50.
Parent - By staylor (***) [il] Date 2009-10-26 20:20
I find it hard to figure how rybka cluster only gets, even (if you call it) 14/20.

Perhaps it doesn't make much difference if you leave it calculate for up to 2 hours, or even overnight? If it gets to 40 ply depth in 20 minutes, then leaving it 8 hours would probably not get it even close to 50 plies, so perhaps, why bother?
Still, it just goes to show how weak are the weaknesses of computerchess, if even a 100-core Rybka 3-4, can't do what it doesn't understand from knowledge.
Parent - - By 8lrr8 (***) Date 2009-10-27 03:16
do u know of any positions coming from actual games that u think the cluster might not be able to solve (that arent fortress positions)?

I don't understand the last one. What does white play after 46.h4 gxh4?
Parent - - By Vinvin (***) [be] Date 2009-10-28 11:12
Probably bring the white queen to h3.
Parent - - By Kappatoo (*****) [de] Date 2009-10-28 11:30
How? What if black plays h3 on the next move?
Parent - - By George Tsavdaris (****) Date 2009-10-28 11:40
I can't find where i have the solution right now but i guess something like:
1. h4 gxh4 2. Qc1 h3 3. gxh3 h4
2k5/2p5/1q1p4/pPpPp3/N1P1Pp1p/P4PbP/K7/2Q5 w - - 0 4

And now Nc3 instead of capturing the Queen and with a plan like Ka4/Nb3/Qd2 winning the a-Pawn for example like:

4. Nc3 Qb7 5. Kb3 Kb8 6. Ne2 Qc8 7. Qf1 Kb7 8.Ka4 Kb6 9. Nc1 Qg8 10. Nb3 Qc8 11. Qh1
Parent - - By Kappatoo (*****) [de] Date 2009-10-28 11:44
Yes, but white can carry out this plan immediately. So why not start with 1.Kb3 or Nc3?

I guess this is hopeless for Rybka anyway.

Interesting... do you have a PGN file with solution variations, or an EPD file with bm/am entries(*)? That would be useful. Thanks anyway.

Hi George (or anybody), I'm curious what the complete, mate-in-12 variation is for the 3rd puzzle (1.Bc2+ etc.).  Thanks.

Vinvin,
Thanks for the reference to the great positions on your website.  I agree that after 1.Bc2+ Kxh5 2.d8=Q Nf7+ 3.Ke6 Nxd8+ 4.Kf5 e2 5.Be4 the mate is quite nice (and quickly found by software).  But I'm wondering about 1.Bc2+ Kxh5 2.d8=Q Kg4 ...  I can't find the forced mate within George's specified conditions (1.Bc2+ and mate in 12).  Do you have a solution?
Thanks,
Charles

It may seem there is no mate in 12 as i've said(there is a win of course though). Initially before many years(more than 10) i've seen the problem as mate in 12 but your comment of Kg4 made me remember someone in CCC before 5-6 years mentioning this same move that destroys the mate and i guess you are right.

In atonement for this mistake of mine, here is another good puzzle that can bring to the Rybka cluster some fun. :-)
Avoid 1.Nxd3? and 1.hxg7? that draw and play 1.Nb3!! that wins(by Arpad Rusz).

Isn't it the idea of trapping the king to h2 and mating with queen at h4 (without moving white king)?

You do not need a cluster to see that white wins.
better evaluation of mobility is enough

Give movei a few minutes and it is going to see a clear advantage for white(more than +2 pawns).
hopefully with some hours it may see a score of more than +8 pawns.
