Is Rybka going to participate in a Chess 960 champinoship?

Extremely unlikely, since it doesn't even play chess960 at the moment

In my spanish-german dictionary Teilnehmer means participante (participant)

So, perhaps Vas has been busy with Chess 960 implementation too  ;)

That would be great news if he has been - he has previously said it was low priority....

maybe it's easy to implement... since I will play in Mainz, too, it will be nice. Maybe I will take some photos an give a short report on the rybka website then...

Yes, I can confirm that Rybka is going to play there.

would you be using a special version of rybka?

I'll implement the castling rules, and Larry will probably look a bit at Rybka's opening play.

Great stuff Vas. I'm a real fan of Chess960 !!!!

Of course the CCRL Chess960 ratings list is one list that you are not number one on at the moment, because you don't play it :-)
That honour goes to the mighty Hiarcs

It seems the invited engines for WCCC 960 in Mainz are Rybka, Shredder, Jonny and Spike. Unfortunately the rating list leader Hiarcs has not been invited http://computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/404FRC/

It is a bit of a shame as this is similar to Rybka not being invited to the Fritz v junior match.

Oh well 1 date to scrub out in the diary.

Best Wishes,

Harvey

What is the justification for inviting Jonny?  I can understand the other three engines: Rybka (world's strongest chess engine), Shredder (champion last year), and Spike (champion the year before), and this naturally leaves a fourth opening: highest on current rating lists: Hiarcs.  Instead, they chose "Program with greatest percentage of "n's" in the name".

I would suggest you to ask them, they could still change the modus and invite you, too .

their answer:

Hiarcs was not invited because we and the sponsors wanted the two world champions of 2005 and 2006, the runner up of 2005 and 2006 (Jonny) and the strongest chess engine and current world champion Rybka to play in Mainz.

It does sound like/similar to the excuse as to why Rybka was not invited(as Hiarcs tops the 960 rating list) to play in the Fritz v Junior match ;-)

"Program with greatest percentage of "n's" in the name" also sounds as a strong motivation.

Life isn't fair :(

lol :-)

Sounds kind of goofy. Why was it essential for them to have 4 entries rather than 5 or more?

Maybe the winner plays Hiarcs ;-)

I agree ... Hiarcs should most definetely been allowed to play 960 and really makes no sense why it is not included.  I am not a big fan of 960 but I can see how a lot of people can be attracted to it.  In theory I think Rybka will do very well simply because it evaluates funky positions the best ... and with 960 you get plenty of funky positions.

Should put to bed all those claims that the developer created a special book line to win a game.Just pure skill will win.

Hi,

I think that is one of the nice things about playing FRC that from the strange start positions it is totally down to the engine.

Best Wishes,

Harvey

Yes, but on average every 480 games they can use Jeroen's book :-)

I tend to think that diligent bookmakers could use book far, far more often by creating books with reasonable-quality games from each of the allowed starting positions--even a book that is only about 8 moves deep could provide a fairly high advantage in something like this.

Agreed, but that would be a huge book...

Just for fun (not for serious play in a tournament, of roucse), you can lie to Rybka about the castling and it will manage to play/analyze Chess960 just fine. Just say none of the sides can castle; the analysis will obviously be faulty in some cases, but it's still much better than nothing. :-)
