has anybody yet built a tree with the eco codes and opening names? If so, I (and I'm sure many others) would love to get a copy

Update 3.0.5 was supposed to manage this issue, but it does not.

Update 3.0.5 introduces the base for ECO indexing support. It isn't what ozziejoe wanted - not a tree with opening names and eco codes.

The problem is, most starting positions may transpose to a wide variety of ECOs.

I'm not sure how you could build a tree for this. It would of course be easy to show the info when you are at the current position but how to keep/display this when you have moved on into the middlegame.
For me it seems like a feature that must be handled by the gui.

Edit: If you want to build a tree for this I think you would find what you need on the internet, search for ecomaster in pgn format and build it from this with keeping the comment.

I found a pgn with all the eco codes. well, at least it has the openign names. However, the eco names seems to be in the white name field, which i can not figure out how to display in the tree. anyway, here is the file

http://www.chessville.com/misc/misc_codes_ecocodes.htm

edit: here is another file with more complete eco codes but no opening names

Seems like a little pgn utility is needed :)

Four files:

ECOMast.pgn - Original file from Onstad
ECOMast1.pgn - ECO as comment
ECOMast2.pgn - Openingname as comment
ECOMast3.pgn - ECO and openingname as comment

odd g's eco 3 seems to work well, and you can add the annotations to the tree of your choice. still, buffos, it sounds like your work  with eco will provide the best possible solution, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Remember this:

Sorry that I didn't catch what you was trying to do, If you want to do anything with pgn/epd files let me know so I can see if I have any automatic ideas.

Attached is what I needed to write to do the converting (ugly and made in a few minutes), not much when you have made the ground before. I also attached the exe file (as zip).

Exactly. A position in the middlegame has no (And should not have) ECO ID.  You can reach such a position in many ways (simple retro analysis suffice)

Not the position but the game you are playing belongs to an ECO code and an opening variation. The ECO coding system is for classifying games.

I have a half finished eco code tree. Node doen yet. Missing C50-C99
All other codes are in, with opening namings.. all manually entered.
I just have to find some time to finish it and share it here.

I just dont want to be accused of any mistakes :)

It's quite nice to have the ECO tree evaluated this way, but is there a way to dump the results of the evaluated ECO lines? I want to know which ECO lines have been refuted etc
